I decided to take the scenic 'long way home' route from the Scottish Pre '65 Trial in Kinlochleven yesterday and went north through Fort William, then East along the A86 from Spean Bridge (lovely road, dry, warm, and I only saw four cars !).

Now to the point.

Coming out of Fort William at about 55mph, my speedometer started swinging about - one moment showing 110 then dropping back to normal.

Eventually it wound itself off the dial and the needle broke in half :blast.

I wasn't doing any stupid speeds either, just touring at 4,000 rpm or less in top - its a 1989 R100GS with 51,600 miles on the clock.

The Odometer kept working until I re-fuelled and tried to reset it - then it just jumbled the numbers and hasn't moved since.

The drive cable was new just a couple of thousand miles ago.

I have heard that the speedos are a weak point on the older GS'. Is there someone who can repair them or is it a £165 visit to Motorworks for a new one (second hand doesn't sound like a great solution) ? ? ?

I have done a search but haven't managed to find anything relevant, so apologies if this has been covered before.

Bob.

Thanks Nud1e, I'll contact Speedorepairs and Speedycables (JDO-Instruments don't touch bike instruments !).

I'll post the outcome.

Bob.

As I suspected . . .

SpeedoRepairs only touch British instruments.

SpeedyCables may be able to repair it but it will take 6 to 8 weeks turnaround with a guideline cost of £80.

I can't bear to have the bike off the road for that length of time so I have ordered a new one from Motorworks (they don't have a used one).

If I am feeling flush (some time after my daughter's wedding !) I'll get the broken speedo repaired and keep it as a spare.

Bob.

mines the same - apart from my mileometer stills works.

i set up a bicycle speedo, calibrated with a GPS on my R100GS.
works perfectly :thumb2 - but no backlight at night.

So.... i got an old (ancient!) GPS unit, just for the speedo on it.

sorted. :bounce1
well - it'll do. :D
am too tight to pay whats asked for a new one thats likely to go the same way as the old. :P

My speedo has been bouncing around the place for the last 1500 miles and the needle just broke last night. So I would be interested to hear where this thread leads to, in the meantime i'll just stick to the GPS for the speed, at least it is accurate..

Brother Monk, :D
i reckon this thread will, like any i've seen in various places in the past, gain no new ideas or info as to the eternal (infernal?) problem of Airhead speedo cures.
i.e;
buy a new one that will eventually go the same way as the old / or use alternative methods;
aftermarket / bicycle or GPS.
never heard of a "fix"

but i sincerely hope to be proven wrong :thumb

My Names Dave, and I am a speedo victim... :thedummy

My trip meter broke at 52,000ish, then the speedo starting waving slightly, then at 54,021 the Milemeter broke and now the needle is slightly worse if i'm going 70mph it reads between 45mph and 110mph.... So I thought I'd either take an average or go with the GPS idea for trip and speed..

I decided with the latter.:thumb2

off route / recalculating / thread hijack.....?

so,
any ideas on how to neatly, subtlely permanently mount a GPS into / onto an Airhead dash / handlebars :nenau

without using jubliee clips / tie wraps! :blast

Thank you / in advance /

Og / abuser / of the forward slash :P

Og,

I use a Touratech locking mount for my Motorrad Navigator I.

Not subtle, waterproof, or particularly safe though :blast

Bob.

Bob,

far too subtle.
... i'll have to think about this. :green gri

:D

goes off in search of araldite and baling wire....
