Having owned an 1150 and 1200 i am thinking of getting an 1100 GS but have never ridden one , will i be disappointed ?? I know it won't be as smooth as the 1200 but i'm hoping it will have the low torque of the 1150 !!

We all have our favourites from the range but having owned and ridden everything from the 1100gs to the latest 1200 adv I decided to go right back to the 1100gs and I am not disappointed.I have just fitted one of Johns chips and I will keep the 1100gs for the foreseeable future. It stands out in a crowd and is functional, practical and I think will hold it's value very well.

Is it alot down on power compared to the 1150 ??

GS

Hi

I am a big fan of the 1100 I would go as far to say that all round it is one of the best bikes that BMW have ever made.

Not the fastest does not have all the gadgets that some people are so fond of but for build quality being able to service it yourself longevity etc for me it is the best, and does not cost 15,000 if you can find one with reasonable mileage go for it.

I have done 200.000 miles on 3 1100 bikes serviced them myself and never had any problems:D

Not had an 1150GS, but have had an 1150R.
I would say 1150 was a bit more relaxed at 90 plus but as I tend to cruise at 85 it wasn`t an issue for me. The first gear ratio on the 1100 is way better than the 1150. Build quality of the 1100 is better I reckon.
I like my 1100 so much I have bought a spare. I now have one with 123K and another with 100K less than that.

1150 Single Spark for me. Slicker gearbox and less prone to problems than early 1100's (the rear slave cylinder gearbox seal requires the gearbox to be removed and opened up for the 1100 for example). Build quality; this really does depends on who(s) owned it previously. My 1150 has no corrosion, 13 years old and it looks superb.
My 5 owner 1100 had a fair bit of surface corrosion and there is no way I would try to remove nuts/bolts such as the exhaust stud nuts as they I know will happily sheer off.
The 1150 twin spark engine was the nicest I owned, but they do have issues with stick coils and those servo brakes if you opt for ABS (although if the brake fluid had been changed every year it wouldn't put me off).

The 1150 to me rides a little smoother all round, not by a huge margin, but definitely better.

Only 5bhp. at 80bhp

Nice power, better gear ratios

1150 GSA is closest to the 1100GS, in terms of drive and delivery

Best GS, that BMW have ever made, to this day

Slave cylinder on a 1100GS?

Slave cylinder on a 1100GS?

No, not slave cylinder just the cable on the 1100's, but they both have a seal at this point at the rear of the gearbox that the clutch push rod passess through. If it leaks gearbox oil can work its way down to clutch.
To fix on the 1150 - remove rear wheel, shock and slave cylinder, pop seal out and replace.:)
To fix 1100 - gearbox out, gearbox split.:(

I've bren very happy with 1100. It takes me just about where any bike in that class could and behaves very nice. I've once tested 1200 and didn't get any kicks.

Best mods are new shocks and Johns chip. Speaking about 20 year old bikes they would need new shocks anyway.

About anything can be done by yourself. I did the gearbox, as the mentioned pushrod seal started to leak and destroyed clutch. Not so hard job but time consuming. Also changed another head gasket after a little oil leak.

5 speed tranny is just ok as its very rare tondrive speeds above 150 km/h.

Early single spark 1150 every time! :clap Can't fault mine. So reliable, very few electronics to go wrong and plenty of farkles available if you're that way inclined. :thumb2
