I'm looking at a 2001 1150GS and need a bit of advice on what to look out for and what would be a fair price.

The bike I'm looking at is a 2001 in blue and white. Pretty manky and unloved looking on the surface, left heated grip is inop, right grip split but heater working. A fair few corroded bolts, front cover and handle bars also corroded. The clutch lever seems a lttle soggy, might just need bleeding as it goes into gear ok.

On the upside it has only done 24k, starts first press of the button and the engine seems smooth and quiet other than a slight tick from the left pot. Its fitted with a Remus can and y piece and would come with the original parts. Everything else seems to work ok and it's got a years mot and six months tax. Tyres are good and the owner claims it's had a new starter, clutch and battery fairly recentley. He is looking for £2500 does that seem a fair price for age and condition?

Thinking of going for another look at the weekend so would appreciate any addvice as I've never owned a BM before

Post a pic up :thumby:

Sent you a pm

You have my number.

Can't tell much from the photo. Any bike of that age will be a risk so be careful.

I would want to know why the clutch went so early? Who did the work? Any guarantee? Whole clutch assembly or just friction plate? Same for starter motor - seems to have failed early.

Any receipts? Does the owner know his stuff?

These bikes are fairly simple to work on if that is your thing.

I paid 2200 for a relatively clean 20k mile yellow bike last year. Where's the spark plug cap cover, wheels look very dirty (check spokes).
Clutch may well be the slave cylinder (contaminates the clutch if not sorted quickly).

If you can get it for 2k ish then it's worth a punt:thumb2

Check paperwork to verify mileage if poss.

Just mho :thumby:

that looks a bit of a dog :barf

It looks in better nick than half of the bikes what appear on this very site.

Check at the back of the gearbox. Thats where the slave cyl for clutch is. The banjo where the rubber pipe goes on corrodes and leaks, but your lever would be more than soggy. Slaves go, as said previously and put fluid along the pushrod tube onto clutch. Good way to check is to whip the starter out (5 mins) and check the clutch for wetness or streaky oily bits.
Clutches should last longer, but depends on the balloon who had it last. Engine speed clutches dont tolerate as much abuse as normal ones.

Ticking could be anything from the throttle body worn, tappets, cam chain tensioner, but I wouldnt worry unless its bad. Left heated grip always goes first. Have fitted one, but cant remember how difficult it was.

Check the final drive bearing and the two pivot bearings where the concertina rubber thingy is. Piece o pish to replace if you do it properly.
Back brake caliper slidey thing seizes up. At least it has done on all the ones Ive had.
Exhaust pipe studs rust and shear-off and are a c*nt to replace.
Wiring at headstock sometimes breaks if the ties have not been released.
There is a thing in the front called a hall sensor. Dont worry about it but if it breaks ... your fucked unless you carry a spare. Everyone has at least two in their garage (except me) and about 1% of these have ever been used, so they are hard to find .. unless you are wealthy and buy a new one.

You will think the headlamp is broken ... but it is not. It is meant to be that dim. You can get a thingy conversion which makes it ok ..ish.

Fork bridge corrodes quicker than the cables on the Forth road bridge.

Gear indicator is well known for being a liar.

Silver 1150 front covers corrode quicker than black ones or 1100s because the modern paint is crap and all the real rufty-tufty folk in here never clean anything, because its cool not to. (actually, they are just lazy office worker folk who dont like getting their hands dirty, and want their bike to look like Ewan Boorman's).

Apart form all that ... sometimes they just go on forever regardless of what they look like, and its not that expensive is it?

There are a couple of folk on here who know more than me, so they might know more of what to look for.

I had a quick look at it last week but never bothered going into to much detail with the present owner as he reckoned he had some other guys coming to view and was hoping for a better price and I reckoned it was not worth what he was hoping for so I left my number a walked away. Seems the other buyers did not pan out so has asked if I'm still interested. Present owner bought it from a mate who needed cash to buy a Land Rover and he has only ridden it twice and decided it's not his cup of tea. I'll go back for another look and take it for a test ride this time and do a bit more digging on the history and repairs carried out previously. I don’t have a problem with doing the spannering myself and the GS looks like it is a fairly simple bike to work on. If I can get it for the right price it would be worth doing up.

I appreciate the advice and will have a good close look at the things you guys have highlighted. Cheers
