Isolation Adaptors / Ground Loop Eliminator?

I have a Zumo 550 and Autocom Super Pro Avi which is connected to my phone via Bluetooth! I did have a Ground Loop Eliminator [GLE] when it was fitted to my VFR and when I swapped it to my 2006 1200GS, I found that the GLE made no difference at all, so I removed it. The set up worked very well on the 1200GS for almost 3 years.

I bought a 1200RT in November and fitted the Autocom almost straight away and wired the bike for the Zumo above the clocks. I have just bought a Migsel Sat Nav mount for the RT this week and was fitting it to the bike yesterday. All went very well, except that I now have an annoying buzzing noise all the time!!

I sold the GLE on fleabay last year!! My mate had two ‘spare’ filters, which are shown on the photos, but on closer inspection of them, one has a 3 pole pin and the other has a 4 pole pin but neither gets rid of the buzzing. In fact with the 3 pole one, I get no audio at all from the Zumo!

Anyway, on closer inspection of the wiring on the bike and the various instruction manuals, I am a bit confused as to where I have gone wrong this time as the 1200GS and the 1200RT both have Canbus and should be no different??

The Zumo and the Autocom are hard wired to the bike and I now see from the Autocom leaflets that I have that I should use a Ground Loop Eliminator but there seems to be so many to choose from.

I also see on line that the standard music lead [Part 2245] is a 3 pole to a 4 Pole! I must confess I have not noticed this before but I assume that the 3 Pole plugs into the Zumo and the 4 Pole to the Autocom?? The Garmin manual makes no mention of what the 3.5mm plug is! [3 or 4 Pole]

Oh, and just to complicate things, when I fitted the cable for the Zumo, I had to use an extension lead as the Autocom is at the rear lights and as I was not really aware of the 3 Pole / 4 Pole scenario, that connection ‘may’ be causing an issue too as I have no idea if it is 3 or 4 Pole. I will have to strip the panels off the bike to get access to my neat installation that I hoped I would never have to reveal for a long time. Haha!!

So, now that I have outlined the issue, can you answer the following;

1. Why did the set up without the GLE work on the GS and not the RT?
2. I will replace the lead and extension with a new 2 metre long lead, confirm that the 3 Pole end goes at the Zumo and the 4 Pole end at the Autocom.
3. What GLE should I buy?
4. What is the ‘all red’ filter for? It might be a 1285. [photo]
5. What is the red and black filter and what is it for? [photo]

Thanks, Keith

None of those isolators will be correct for the Super Pro, you will need a Part 1273 to handle the phone side of the Zumo plugged into the AUX1 socket.

A Part 1314 would then run from the Zumo into the AUX2 socket to connect the music and GPS side of the Zumo

Give Sam@ Chainspeed a buzz for the parts

Thanks Rich,

I was on the phone to Sam just before lunch time and I spoke it through with him.

I didn't mention in my initial post that I already have a bluetooth dongle in AUX1 [You powered it up for me a couple of years ago].

So I have ordered a couple of 1314's from Sam, one to connect the Zumo to AUX3 and I intend buying a PURE Highway, which I will connect via AUX2 with the other 1314 cable.

That way, my phone works via bluetooth and I will get supressed stereo from the Zumo and the Pure Highway.

Please tell me that this will work??

Keith

Cheers Rich.

The cables arrived this morning and they certainly stop the buzzing but there is still a very low background sort of hum when things are on.

It is only really noticeable when I don't have ear plugs in though and has always done that, but is it the norm?

Keith

is the hum bike related as in up and down with revs? but some Zumo's do give a slight hum which would be heard via in-ear speakers as you have to think they block a lot of the background sound coming in

No, the noise does not change at all with the revs................... It is just a faint electrical hum [if that makes sense] that I thought would go away but not.
My mate has a zumo but different Autocom, I will plug my helmet into his sometime and see if he has it.

As I said before it is not an issue when ear plugs are worn.
