I'm looking for advice on a cheapo low end CAD software package.
It will need to output in standard dxf format for sending to a machinist.

Any recommendations??????

As above, Draftsight is as good as it gets without paying for it.

This is very true which is why I would look at AutoCAD LT, lot's of people know how to use it and nothing beats getting someone to show you how it works. It's now on a subscription pricing model.

Not sure from your OP if you need 2D or 3D capability.

Mainly 2D, but 3D would be nice.
I'll have a look this weekend at the sudgestions

Pro engineer or pro desktop can be gotten free and loads tutorials online.

Pro desktop not best but ideal learn on and free.
