Calculating distances/times between points on a route?

Hi,

I've just gotten City Navigator 10 and am having a play with it and while it seems quick and easy enough to set up routes, once they're setup, I'm finding that there are a couple of things I'd like to do that I dont' seem to be able to. I've checked through the tutorials and can't find the answers.

If I've created a long route, is it possible to see how far into the route a waypoint is and for the software to predict the time taken to travel between those points? There is the measurement tool, but I only seem to be able to get that to work 'as the crow flies'.

I've created a route through Europe that should take about 15 days or so and now that the route is done, I'd like to work out stopping points, places to stay overnight, places to eat, refuel etc but it's difficult to work out the times and mileages just looking at a line on a map.

I'd much rather work from one large route, adding waypoints as opposed to building a lot of small routes. And I'd rather not have to create a second route over the first, between each way point to get the point to point info if I can help it.

Anyone else come across this?

Right click on the route, select route properties, then look at the "directions". Waypoints are in amongst the directions.

I can see the directions in there and the waypoints, but I can't see how to find how far into the trip that waypoint is? I do have a total distance/time at the bottom, but nothing that will tell me how long it'll take to get just to that waypoint or, say, from that waypoint to the one two after it. I must be missing something!

In Mapsource, right click on the route, select "Route Properties" then select the "Directions" tab. The bit you want is the 3rd column - it's headed "Distance". To get the distance between 2 waypoints like that though, you'd have to deduct one figure from another.

I still think you'd be better off splitting the whole trip into daily routes, rather than a single "route through Europe that should take about 15 days or so". :nenau

Any help.

Uriel,

Hi,
is it possible to see how far into the route a waypoint is and for the software to predict the time taken to travel between those points?

Are you able to see all your columns at the top? If you right click on the column header you will then get a drop down showing the other fields available.
Distance and Total time should help you work it out.

Sample:

Or you could export the directions from Mapsource to Excel and then select your waypoints, delete the direction details and then calculate the distances between each waypoint.

Something like this:

Why a Europe long route?

The GPS won't be able to tell you easily how far / long you're from the nights stop,

if you go off route it'll take an age to recalculate the entire route, and if you've a GPS that learns your typical speeds over roads, that'll fcuk up all the timings you so carefully did at home.

You'll probably exceed the waypoints / via points limit (as mapsource uses via points even if you don't) and then that'll make the GPS unhappy.

If you find halfway through the route a section of road is closed, working out how to add / edit the via points will test your patience.

Do the right thing, a days route for a days journey. But what do I know :mmmm

I totally agree, you've got no chance of managing a single route over 15 days :thumb2

Thanks all.

My properties only had the first 2 columns, number and direction. I'll turn on the others and that will sort me out champion.

As for the long route, I'll take the advice and split it up. I was considering doing it anway which is one of the reasons I'd like to be able to measure distances along the route, so I can find suitable places to end a day and then split the route.

Still wish there was a measurement tool that would follow the path of a route rather than as the crow flies, though.
