Recommend me some useful apps to download onto it

Shazam has been mentioned, gets my vote.

Ipint totally useless but will amaze non Iphone owners

"AroundMe " is pretty good : nearest bank, petrol station, pub etc (free!)
"RedLaser" : scans barcodes and tells you who's selling cheapest (also free I think, but worth 59p if it isn't). Doesn't always have a lot of comparisons but has saved me a bob or too
iPint is, as already said, good for showing off the iPhones capabilities but essentially useless (and I work for the company that launched it!)
iFart is childish (but fun)
Trainline is good for finding the next train home
Sky+ good if you have Sky+ !

Facebook and Twitterific are good for sn
A lot of the news outlets have free apps for up to date news
Free RSS reader is good
I use epocrates at work - very good medical resource
Brothers in Arms - Hours of Heros has lots of good reviews - i've not played it yet
Urbanspoon is good for finding recommended local eateries ets
Worksnug is very good for local coffee houses to work wifi in - and has a fantastic interface
loads of sports apps eurosport uefa.com mobile and ecb cricket my faves
Shopsavvy - free barcode reader - in the us it immediately finds bargain outlets selling the item you've scanned

Just get on the appstore and browse - its great

AnnoyATeen - emits a high frequency tone that'll annoy all the young 'uns around you. If you're old like me you won't hear it and if, like me, you work in a large open plan office you'll have hours of purile fun

I've also just downloaded the new Guardian app (yeah, I know.................... ). However, the way it works and it's interface are just wonderful - allows off-line browsing and is very intuative to use

nice planetarium program. The really neat thing for the 3gs users is that when you point it at the sky the gps and the compass basically overlay the sky with what you're actually seeing. Brilliantly designed program which is a must if you're at all interested in the night sky
