Your assistance please.
Just had the first 600 mile check (Battersea) & and am told I have the above. I'm told I should monitor.
What is this & how concerned should I be.
Thanks

I think they said, "Your cam chain is missing'

Be very concerned.

But, whoa, hang on a minute. Misting is something completely different. Maybe he said, "Your visor is misting"? That will be the colder autumnal air, nothing to worry about.

PS Why not ask the bod behind the counter to explain, then and there, any points you might not understand? It's free and it enlivens their day.

PPS Why am I never at Battersea to hear these wonderful conversations take place?

I am in Battersea in a week or so. If you have had no joy I'll follow it up for you.

All good jokes but was deff' misting.
Picking it up now but b4 having a debate wi them was looking for some wisdom from the parish.
Understand this may lead to a longer term concern and wanted to leave a clear
Marker b4 riding away.

Wisdom? You have it in the two replies.

47 minutes later..... and still no news.... Tension mounts....

Would you translate that into English please?

Cam Chain Misting

I have been around engines nearly all of my life and I genuinely have no idea what is being referred to. I would suggest that you go back to Battersea and ask them to explain in terms that you can understand what they mean by cam chain misting.

Silver bolt on top of the left pot as it joins the main engine block. Can b seen (wi the aid of a torch) by looking diagonally up from the gear shift. Slight sign of moisture ('misting') at the base of the bolt. Advised this does not constitute 'leaking" (oil).....yet. Told to monitor. Also told this is not a repair at this time as need not confirmed.
Make sense?

Sounds like an oil leak from the left hand cam chain tensioner then. Sounds like it is a slight seepage; it is a PITA to get that one out, probably why they don't want to fix it.

Was it like that when the bike was brand new?

No?

Will it get better with time?

No?

Tell them to fix it under warranty!

Sounds like you need to ring the service dept. up at your dealer and ask for clarification on the problem and what the possible causes may be.

As it's a new bike, and if it requires major engine surgery, then I'd be rejecting it. Simple. I wouldn't want to spend ~£13K on a new bike to have the engine out, opened and operated on so early.

My advice would be that the longer you leave this, the harder it will be for you to reject it. Assuming this is a suitable course, but you won't know until you push for answers.

Look me 'ol fruit, it's your bike. Do what you think is right. Above all, if you are not happy with the service ask the bods behind the counter questions until you are satisfied. Nobody here works for BMW Motorrad in Battersea. Nobody here has seen your bike or were present when you picked the bike up and then rode away. You obviously had some concerns, sufficient to warrant your initial post, but then failed to satisfy yourself when you actually went to pick the bike up.

You now know that it's not the cam chain that is misting (something that made no sense at all) but apparently some sort of oil leak from around the cam chain tensioner bolt sufficient to result in oil misting. The exact cause of the leak is unknown ( though can be guessed at, perhaps) nor is it known if it is persistent.

The advice you received (and apparently accepted) from BMW Battersea was to wipe the area clean, to ride the bike and see if the misting returns. If it does, return to Battersea and request that the problem is resolved to your satisfaction. If it does not return, be happy.

You do not need our help to put a marker down, you can do it yourself. If you were / are unhappy with or do not understand the advice given to you by Battersea you should make it plain to them (not us) at the time or sometime soon, preferably today and certainly before you forget.
