Came home tonight on a recovery wagon!

Been out today enjoying the 'unusual' sunny weather. 185 miles no problem...Hartside etc.

Stopped in Kendal for a break. Pressed the button to restart, engine spluttered for a few seconds and died. Tried again, spluttered for fewer seconds and died. After that turned over but didn't even try to start. Soon noticed that the buzzing petrol pump noise was absent....so think its the well documented fuel pump problem :nenau.

My bike an 07 GSA. I thought that problem had been sorted. Didn't have this problem on my 04 standard 12 GS.

Bikes done 7.5K....2.5k in Spain in August....glad it didn't go there! Anyway BMW recovery were very good and have brought me home and are going to contact me on Monday to arrange a pick up time to take it to the local dealers.

Not wanting to upset the apple cart, but I know what I would do with a 07 bike that breaks down.

Just one of the 5 main <STRIKE>faults </STRIKE>features nice Mr BMW has included in the design for us. :thumb
Namely:-
30 month disposable battery.
Gearbox oil leak.
Engine oil leak.
Final drive bearing\seal.
Fuel pump problem.
Of course all come with the "goodwill" quick fix to keep us happy (for a while).:aidan

Sorry to hear of the problem but I did 420 miles yesterday and DIDN`T come home on a recovery truck:augie:augie

Does this make me lucky to have got through the day or am I one of the 1000`s who don`t have any issues with there GS-A????

21,000 in 12 months with only a full beam switch failure which was replaced!!

checking the condition of the fuel pump relay is a quick job. surprised more people (or dealers) don't do it :confused:[/QUOTE]

take the LH tank side cover off, then the round slotted cover from the fuel pump (pulls off).

unplug the two connectors on the top of the fuel pump energiser/relay. you might need a small screwdriver to undo the catches, which are a bit hard to see.

undo the 2 torx screws that hold the unit on.

the relay is connected by two wires at the bottom, these are the bits that seem to corrode from what i've read (not occured on mine). this happens when the o ring around the relay leaks & allows water to fill the well that the connector sits in.

check all is dry & connectors etc. are in good shape. check you have the latest o ring, identifiable by colour. can't remember what latest colour is :o but i'm sure someone else here knows.

i undo the lower connector to check, then give it a squirt with ACF50.

a dab of silicone grease on the o ring, and replace unit making sure you don't squeeze the o ring out of place leaving a gap replace screws & plug in wires.

a further spray of ACF50 on upper area to seal the lot.

replace covers.

that should stop the common corrosion problem. not tested yet, as i'm the only person i've ever heard of giving it a check. when mine fails, i'll know i've wasted my time, but not much :D


there may be some other issue with the relay? there have been 2 different units fitted in production (later ones have angled fins). my tip only helps the corrosion problem.

Sorry to hear about the prob mike, mine died on the M65.
It took em 1hr 50mins to get to me, least you wer in a better spot on the map i was on the hard shoulder at Darwen.

for those of us with poor attention spans - this is a TECHNICAL forum. I have as many jokes and sparring piss takes with the likes of Timolgra et al as the next person but I do it in the correct area anything else need explaining???
