Came home tonight on a recovery wagon!

Ahhh now I see what you meant. Cheers Stuart.

Nothing better than cheap direct customer feedback. Methinks they're getting it already but without the inherent risks of having to speak directly to the great unwashed (us). They leave their franchised dealers to take all the bad stuff, which is probably no different from any other manufacturer.

For the last 10 years my wife has had to put up with pictures of GS's on the bedroom ceiling (subtle hint). I've dreamt of owning one and travelling the world for so long...... then it breaks down 5 miles from home.....But for some strange reason I,d still buy another (despite my old Varadero never letting me down and the need to get my hands on another 12K)

Just have to keep an eye on the pump relay and I will be buying a spare

Over the last 11 months I have extracted so much vluable info from this site who needs a BMW technician anyway

PS
I still havnt travelled the world yet (something to do with having a wife and three kids), but look out Charley Boorman . . . . one day !:bounce1

I think you are being a little disingenuous here.....

I hope you used the word "disingenuous" without too much thought?

I do genuinely believe in self help so "disingenuous" is very insulting.

I know that there are two faults that can happen with this bike that will stop you dead. I mitigate for these two faults. I have owned one 1200 GS and two 1200GSAs and these covered 50,000 completely troublefree miles between them.

I also bought the GS 911 diagnostic tool - never needed on my bike but has been used on other's. I'm happy to spent these hard earned pounds because of the places I visit; I believe it is good insurance in the unlikely event of a problem. I also carry a puncture repair kit and pump - used many times on other bikes but only once on mine. I can change a tyre as well - I got a beadbreaker from Gary Holloway.
None of the above makes me a bad person - or disingenuous.

People who have had problems seem to broadcast them loudly and continuously. No problem with that - but as others have said it can give an unbalanced impression of the issues. Then you have the 1150 snipers - never owned a 1200 but seem to know all about commenting on any problems. My 1150 was a great bike - but not perfect, and not as good as the 1200; BMW have just moved things on. I'm not going to slag off the 1150 though.

You don't sound disingenuous to me Wilb, as I am a lucky or lazy sod when it comes to carrying spare kit you sound like a good guy to ride with, you have given thought to your kit nothing wrong with that, by your comments your friends appear to have much to thank you for too, in fact as I like Northumbria a lot & have lost interest in too much spanner work a move to your doorstep appears to be a good idea. My earlier comments with regard to the 1200's fuel faults & BMW's apparent inability to cure them should not to be construed as a snipe, I have no practical knowledge of the 1200 therefore am not in a position to comment on specifics, as you point out satisfied customers rarely have anything to say. From a personal point of view I am a prospective 1200 customer but still remain unconvinced & will keep the 1150 until I am.

Wilbjr21.... It was not my intention to insult you or anyone for that matter... it simply is not my style... so apologies if you felt slighted.

My main point actually was (because your comments lead me to believe you missed this) that the thread had moved on from general breakdown stuff to more (dangerous) specific manufacturing faults.... faults they seem reluctant to acknowledge.

I too do all my own spannering.... and carry the basic spares when going on a long journey.... but I would not expect to carry the spares the thread was discussing.

Forums, by definition tend to lean towards moans rather than praise.... a fact of life. as my previous threads have indicated I will be buying a 1200GSA... despite reading about the problems..... in fact the forum serves at least one purpose here, in that it for warns you of any impending problems.

One would not expect those problems however to be fundamental in design and function.

Oh well;)

Stuart
