Hi

I have a Nav 5 with lifetime maps. I am unable to tell if the resident camera database automatically updates when I connect the Nav 5 to Garmin Express or if I just have the original included camera data. I have not subscribed to garmin camera assuming lifetime maps = lifetime cameras too.

How wrong am I?

Cheers
Harry

What camera database? Install Garmin Smart Link app on your phone and subscribe - it passes camera and traffic info to Nav 5 in real time - excellent!

You can also use the pocket gps world database and load that onto it. I already pay for a subscription to that and can use it on 3 devices. Unless you have bought a camera subscription from Garmin, then it will be the original camera database

Harry et al.

Did you figure out the camera updates?

I've just replaced my 660 with a Nav V and was surprised to see there is no annual camera subscription option on the Garmin website as there was with the 660.

So, are there speed cameras in the default database at all? Do they update via Garmin Express?

I can see they are in SmartLink at £15 for "live" cameras. I don't care about "live", I just want a recent database without running down my phone batteries. :) Also, I can't see whether that £15 is a one-off charge, or a 12-month subscription.

So has anyone clarified the situation with speed cameras without SmartLink? :nenau

Smart Link Speed camera's are an annual subscription of £15. As mentioned you can also add your own custom POI's for things like the Pocket GPS World database.

I rode up to work last night just the other side of Inverness, 420 ish miles and the Smart Link app got every speed camera on the way including SPEC's systems so not to shabby IMHO with not to much drain on the battery.

The PocketGPS world Database is pretty accurate to, and you can use it on 3 devices, just use the instructions for Nav IV / Garmin Devices here http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/uksafetycameras-garmin.php and it works, that's how I got them onto my Nav V

Also from PocketGPS World "PLEASE NOTE: Garmin have changed the software in recent releases such that Custom POIs have been relocated from 'Where To / Points of Interest / Custom POIs' to 'Where To / Extras / Custom POIs'."

Thanks guys.

So, if the speed camera updates are "live", does it only download cameras in your immediate vicinity? If so, what if you want to update all the speed cameras in Europe but don't want to switch on data roaming. With the old method of a one-time update, at least you knew you had every known camera on your entire map.

I don't think it's "live" in that sense, it's just syncing the database up to the Nav V. I've used mine when I forgot to turn Bluetooth back on the phone, and the camera's all appeared to be there. All you would lose if disconnected is any community shared speed camera's that were recently added or an update that was due to sync while you were offline. It's essentially the Cyclops database getting pushed over via Smart Link.

Thanks. I've just paid my £15. Let's see how it works. I've now got a "Report camera" icon on my map screen but little else. I don't know how I'm supposed to tell it's updating the cameras, but the map still isn't showing the new camera a mile from my house.

Maybe nobody has reported it :)

Maybe. I'm not seeing any cameras on my map screen sitting here at home, so maybe cameras don't show on the map when it's off the bike?

I just would like to see something happening for my £15 :)

Actually, I can see the new camera on the Smartphone Link app on my phone now, just not on my NAV 5. I'll just buy another mount and mount my phone next to my GPS. :D

Smart Link Speed camera's are an annual subscription of £15. "

I queried with Garmin support why my subscription ended in 2095 according to Smartphone Link. They replied, "The Safety Cameras in the Smartphone Link are a Lifetime subscription, which is why it is showing this date."

If this is really a one-off price of £15 then it's much better value £15 per year. I guess I'll find out in a year's time! :)

I have been told that speed cameras is just one off payment. Does anyone know if its the same for live cameras
