When I decided to buy a new-ish RT, I went for the cam head on the grounds that most of the issues which dogged previous hexheads would have been sorted. (Final drive especially.)

I've now done 9k miles (10.7 k miles in total) since last October on my 13 reg, and other than one fuel pump controller failure, no problems. I now have to decide whether to go for the extended warranty. Before I make my mind up, I thought I would see what problems have cropped up for other owners.

So fire away ...

(Thread replicated in the GS section.)

I also have a 13 RT. No real problems so far, though I have had the handlebar switches replaced twice! I don't think the extended warranty covers these but I believe BMW will now replace them for free for up to 5 years.
I am not sure how much the extended warranty goes for but I think I'll do without and just service things as I have to. I am hoping this will work out cheaper in the long term.

Regards.

I'm close to getting a 13 plate cam head. Is the switchgear a common problem?

19k miles on a May 2013 (registered) 1200RT......NO problems to report at all.

That's probably jinxed it now

Had to buy a Montessa just to bugger about with in the workshop:D

My local independent mechanic has confirmed that the switchgear failures are common. In my case the cruise control stopped working. Though this was not a real problem to me, it should not have failed on a bike under 12 months old at the time.
My second failure was when my horn stopped working, which I felt was a safety issue. Both switches were replaced by BMW under warranty and apparently they will now cover them for up to five years.
