Camille's big rebuild

took a grinder to Camille today

:eek::eek: well after sitting looking at the rear subframe and the fook up of a welding job that had been done i had no choice. So this morning i was off to my blacksmith mates place and got to play with some of the meanest cutters and grinders i've ever used. Another mate picked up the subframe this evening to tig weld some new tubes in place and also to add some tags for mounting the mudguard. Tomorrow i'm going to tackle the centre and side stands :eek oh and have a look at the headlight mounts:D

coming along nicely:clap
although has the signwriter missed the letter "e" out, on one of the transfers?:rob:rob

I am sure it should be pasties:D

I think I saw your dad, had an original 1951 pastis on the back of his airhead:augie

I dunno about the rest of them but If I were sorting that I'd have a couple of strengthening plates fitted in there

Thats an awful flimsy looking subframe

Engine/Gearbox Finish

Now that the shot blasting has been done what type of finish, if any are you going to put on the cleaned up bits ?

well spotted

this is why my mate chris has now got the subframe. i've had to remove the whole piece cos the original had had an infill added and let just say the welding looked like pigeon shite. the easyest way was remove the lot and do it again. i've removed the tags that hold the rear mudguard as they had been repositioned so the mudguard could go on top rather than like origanally go underneath. its all the little things that have been done over the years that now need undoing. as for the finish on the engine and box well i'd like to leave it as is but may need to give it a coat of protective oil or when finished i may just give it a good coating of shropshire mud:augie:D
all in all its going to plan and i should get the tank back next week so i can start putting on the detail. still trying to fathom out how to mount the headlight and need to get a clock mount laser cut.

Twidling thumbs

Bugger I'm bored. Sitting waiting for bits to arrive and painting to be done. I did collect some bits today so not so bad. Painted the exhaust today withe heat proof paint and got the brake calipers back after bead blasting, wow they look like brand new. Just got to find some brembo gold caliper paint now. Number boards are done and printed as are some of the tank stickers.
Had an email from rick in Ohio today saying the shocks are finished and should be in the post tomorrow:clap all done as original with heat compensators and valved for my weight.
So there we are, the clocks ticking and I'm still trying to be optimistic that she'll be finished for the wee-kend:blast

here's the pics of bits

pipes have come out nice, they were blasted first so the paint had something to bite onto. calipers were well shitty, chipped paint and covered in brake dust, now look like new.

now thats looking fine

Got my tank back yesterday with the front and rear mudguards all in white. All ready for painting on the motorsport stripes:D decals are all done bar a couple of small ones. And to top it off young chris my master welder and bodger came round with the finished subframe:clap:clap:clap
so all that was left to do was put them all together and see what it looks like:D have to say i'm rather chuffed with the results so far:thumb2

Went to Stafford classic bike show

Today and managed to find a pair of handlebars as fitted originally and also picked up a new front disc. I was hoping to get a brembo master cylinder like they used on old ducati's and guzzi's but it was like finding a needlein a haystack. Some really nice bikes there and I bumped into and old mate who's set up in business building new Manx engines. He's a very clever chap who's managed to get the moulds for the old engines but uses modern materials and manufacturing to make very strong race engines. They fired one up and it sounded bloody awesome. Way to much dosh fore though.

all the pieces are coming together

Bit by bit. today i've collected the tank decals and just tacked them on to get a better line of sight, next job is to rub the tank down with wet n dry to get a better grab for the next stage which is putting on the motor sport stripes. I've painted the brake calipers and test fitted one to see what it looks like and put the decals on the front mudguard. all looking cool now:D
just got to make up the new exhaust endcans after i cut the old ones appart today:blast oh and i test fitted the bars just to see what they look like:D

subframes back

well another part ready to go, so its all coming together:clap:clap did a little test fit and all looks fine although i'll have to leave fitting the rear mudguard until she's on her wheels as i think it needs to be moved rearwards so the wheel doesn't foul. i'll get the paint on the tank this week and then off to my painting buddy for a few coats of clear and bobs yer uncle.
doing a spot of welding tomorrow to make the headlight bracket and clock mount and also doing some bodging to the end cans:thumb2

thank god thats done

spent yesterday doing a spot of welding and fabricating some new exhaust end cans made from the remains of the originals. much shorter than the crappy ones fitted when she was in the marlboro colours so should sound quite fruity:augie
finally got my arse into gear this morning and painted on the motorsport stripes which meant i had to do a spot of paint mixing to get the colours near as dammit. anyway i'm happy with the results as their pretty bloody close to the original colours. so appart from re-doing the OUSE bit on the right side of the tank cos i screwed up she's all ready for clear coat. next job is to try to make a clock mount as the headlight bracket is all done now. if anyone just happens to have a 8inch headlight knocking about looking for a home i'd be glad to find one for it:D
