Hi there

WANTED - Van converted into a camper preferably with a towbar.

I only have a low budget I’m afraid of around £9000.

Pm please if you have anything around this guide price.

Many thanks.

Regards Rob.

For that kind of money you are likely to pick up a real dog of a van and a total headache. Sorry to break it to you so bluntly.

Anything VW comes with "scene tax". I bought a tatty VW T5.1 van with 110k on it and paid £8k (minus my £2600 trade-in) to make into my camper. l I got carried away with the build and probably spent £20k in total, the Skyline Aurora pop top with solar and scenic canvas cost me £4.5k alone ! That said, I have a cracking van that I'm proud to own and will probably never sell. If I was building another I would contact a local mobile auto glass fitter about the windows as they can supply and fit for what it cost me to do the job myself.

For a £9k budget I would be looking to convert my own van, probably £7 for a solid base van and £2k to kit it out internally, enhancing the interior as your future budget allows whilst having the basics in place so you can camp in it. If you can do a bit of DIY all the info is online on Youtube, its a well trodden and well documented path. There are no shortage of suppliers of stretch carpet, insulation, lightweight ply, vehicle electrical items etc etc.

A pop-top roof is very expensive for not a lot of added feature, with hindsight I would buy a higher topped van you can stand up in, like a Mercedes Sprinter or a VW crafter for example. Be aware these can rust quite badly in places so don't buy the first you see. The only downside with a higher topped van is that some public car parks have height bars to stop the travelling community from setting up camp, which in turn prevents you from getting in. Its a small price to pay.

I can confirm buying a van and converting it yourself to your specific needs is probably the best way to go.
I’m doing it myself right now. I got a very tidy van off here as a great base vehicle. :thumb2

If you buy one that’s already been done privately you never know what horrors you’ll find. :blast

There’s quite a few very knowledgeable people on here ( to start with ) that can help with all sorts of great advice. :thumb2

I've now converted 4 vans,2 T4's and 2 Sprinters.Stay clear of anything VW,the scene tax is horrendous and so are most of the fuckwits driving them.I've found the Sprinters an excellent choice, the 1st was a minibus,1 owner, full service history and had a restrictor on in(never been over 61mph from new)The minibus had loads of room, factory night heater, factory windows and factory luggage racks.Under 80k,was a great van, downside for me was its size.

I now have an ex WAV Sprinter, full service history, 1 owner and 60k on the clock.Good thing about this van,it already has all the electric plumbed in(factory fitted wheel chair ramp)Factory windows and full factory trim.I'm half way through with converting this van.

Both vans were around 12k,get a lot of van for your money, especially these WAV motors.

I agree with the comments, get the best base vehicle possible and hopefully enjoy making it your own.
I'm now on van 2, each one is a learning curve.

All good advice me thinks I have had t4 that I have owned for over 20 years but have been looking for a new van ,so after a long time I purchased a mercedes vito 116 sport 2015, all I can say is there is a lot of rubbish out there fingers crossed for my Mercedes. Look at buying one with seats in the back as there will be windows and insulation normally. Good luck and remember come March April time they might be harder to find anice van.

As an aside note.If you convert your own van then get specialist insurance and not commercial(if you haven't changed the log book)my van is down as a windowed van and insured through A plan as a self build conversion.Best bit is you don't need any no claims bonus, the policy will be the same price.Couple of stipulations-windows,bed and stove top.All pretty much standard for a build.Good luck with it.

I’ve owned an Iveco, a Merc and now I’m on a T6, ignore the Burridge01 comment about VW and Fuckwits. I’ve met some amazingly nice people through the VW seen and the T6 forums are nothing but super helpful and everyone helps each other out. Buy what suits your needs and f@@K everyone else. Heed some of the excellent advice from above but perhaps filter the derogatory comments.

We converted a 52K mile 2011 Renault Master LWB minibus that cost us £8500 and it was great. Built a frame for a raised double bed at the back that took a couple of minutes to dismantle so we could get bikes in and also got a folding bench seat thet turned into a double bed. Simple pod with a sink and cooker, plus fridge and it was a brilliant thing to drive. Total to convert was circa £2000 and although it wasn't a flash campervan, it worked really well.

There is a facebook group called "Hymer for Sale" - there can be some proper decent vans on there at times, but not for as much as you might expect...

We've got an A class that we bought second hand - we also have a transporter that we've run for 100k and 13yrs - I would not be mega happy spending a rainy weekend in a van the size of the t5 compared to the luxury of the moho - but we're lucky enough to have that option..

I’m currently sitting in our home converted Fiat Ducato which we converted 3 years ago and have done 90k kms in since. Problem with all older vans including VW and especially Sprinters and Transits is rust. My van is pretty good, most older Renaults (Masters and Trafics) seem OK. Get a decent base van with not too many miles and fit it out to your own needs - ours is pretty luxurious with hot water, heating, wifi, decent kitchen, shower and toilet and fully off grid. Probably cost 15k € to fit out.
