Hi all,
I dropped the bike and baddly damaged the left hand side cylinder cover. I replaced the cover as it was beyond the repair but now the engine is runing in the limp mode (cannot go past 5rpm) and I get this error: Fault in the engine control unit, onwards journey possible, ride carefully to next specialist workshop.
I connecthed Gs911 and get this code:
Fault Code Value 0x3A1B62
Fault Code Description
Camshaft sensor input signal, number and position of edges
implausible

I've replaced teh camshaft sensor but and cleared teh error but it reappaers and teh engine doesn't run properly and stalls. When it is called and I start it, it sounds it is only working on one cylnder. After a minute it runs smoother.

There is no obviuos physical damage apart from the scratch on the cam sensor wheel(pictured). Would it have an impact on the cam timing? I've repositioned it to allign with the cam sensor reader. Any ideas what it can be?

It may be adaptive and needs the adaptation data resetting.

I've just ordered a new sensor wheel (RELUCTOR). I know it has to be alligned with the cam sensor and I followed the procedures when I was replacing it.I do not have the tools to do teh timing check properly but looking at it the camshafts seem ok. I will replace th ereluctor and will check again. Thanks!

Perhaps a check of it being clean is a simple check to do, incase it is something minor - rather than a costly purchase. (unless you've done it already, of course)

I've done it alraedy and cleaned everything. The reluctor itself has some marks so hopefully the new one will fix the issue.

Replaced the reluctor but it has not changed anything. The same rough engine work, limp mode and teh same error;(

Does the fault stay cleared with ign on and engine not started?

Possibly the cam timing is out of range, cams and reluctor should all be set with crank at TDC using a pair of cam jigs and a manual camchain tensioner that presets the correct running tension on the cam chain. Worth getting it done at a dealership along with valve clearances (which affect cam timing) unless you can get the expensive tooling (not easy currently as tooling is made for BMW in batches and the cam tensioner tool is currently out of stock globally).

Id say it's either the actual sensor, or your gap between the reluctor & sensor

Have you done a check on the wiring ,from the sensor back to the ecu?

may be a break in that , from where you had your incident

If you go into live Data you "should" be able to see cam timing signals

But "Implausible" means its not a clear signal or it's out of range

Not clear could be an Aluminium skin from a hefty rub OR a non square edge distorting the initial point
Those front edges look rubbed with alloy or It may just be an effect of the lens

So square wave not clean or the gap too wide OR the impact was enough to move it on the cam and out of phase So it needs recalibrated

Lengthy video, typically American with lots of talk, but pretty comprehensive.

Stuff you need is around the 20 minute mark.

The sensor is new and the reluctor too. The wiring seems OK as well(I get another error when I disconnect the cable from the sensor)

What tension is applied to the cam chain prior to setting the reluctor or timing the exhaust cam? Watching videos of the cam timing procedure, they seem to crank it up really tight like a guitar string before timing things. If you are just relying on the light spring in the tensioner to do it, I don’t think it will be enough.

I assume you are also using a TDC crankshaft locking tool ?

The problem is I don't have the tools to do the timing properly. The camshafts look aligned but this is based on my eye perception;). So far have replaced the reluctor and the sensor hoping this will help as the reluctor was slightly damaged.
I think it's time to take it to the nearest dealership!

I wouldn’t take it for granted that the sensor is good because it’s new. When I searched the error code I found a post elsewhere of a guy who went through 3 oem from dealer sensors before he got a working one.
