....how much a supposed 33lt capacity Fuel Tank on a 2008 R1200GSA actually holds please??
I ask because my Fuel Light came on today with 345 miles having been clocked up since the previous Fill.
When the Light came on, the Range said 44.
By the time I reached the Petrol Station the Odo said 353 and the Range said 40 and yet I managed to get 33.59 lts in, and my guess is that there was room for a little more.
If the Computer is more or less accurate, that would suggest the Tank actually hold around 35 lts.
Is that correct?
It's not a whinge, moan or some kind of anal desire for accuracy.....I'm really just curious :D

If you are that curious, you could drain the petrol out then refill it a litre at a time until it's full.

Be careful not to lose count.

From bone dry to brimmed to the very top I got just shy of 36l in. 33l is to the bottom of the filler tube which is where you are supposed to fill it to but nobody does.

Thanks for that, much appreciated.
Nice to have a decent Range on a Bike for a change.

You will never get to use the 36l it really was bone dry so don't try and count on that unless you carry spare fuel.

No need to, I managed 350 miles without any issues and that wasn't particularly economical Riding.
I'm more than happy with that between Stops.

Ha, yeah maybe.
I'm just " bedding in" a Set of AF-XIED Leads at the minute too.

I'm just on the ferry coming back from the Pyrenees and have been pleased with how much I'm getting from a tank on my GS while bimbling around. The range dropped going up but then increased coming down the other side.
At one point it was showing a best range of 242 miles left and that was after I had done around 20 odd miles after a complete fill up. Never seen it that high before. Was starting to worry that something had stuck and I'd run out in the arse end of nowhere.
On the subject of the AF-XIED units, (don't worry, not going to start a row!), For a while I was tailing a couple of other riders with UK plates and made an observation.
Being the Pyrenees, it was very much twisty roads and up and down the gears. I was directly behind a R1200RT twin cam and noticed from the engine note, that on almost all of the tight bends, I was usually one gear nighter.
Now, I know that the RT is slightly heavier, but not that much. Even in a higher gear I was still catching up on him coming out of the bends.
My point is that the AF-XIED units have made the engine pull much better in the lower revs and I'm short shifting much earlier than before. I think this is contributing to better overall fuel consumption. For the purposes of balance, I'm sure someone with a bike that has been Hilltopped would notice the same thing.

I think the gearing on the gs is shorter than the RT. JJH

Quite often put I upwards of 35 litres. When my fuel gauge is working.

I know the RT has slightly lower gearing, but it was definately a lower gear. I may be old, but I can still tell the difference. :rob

So he prefers to ride in a different gear than you, for a given circumstance ? I'm not quite sure what that proves ?:nenau

I would say the tank from empty to right up to the top of the filler neck will take 36 litres or so BUT I would say that only 32/33 litres of that fuel is useable

I've put more than 35 litres into my tank which probably was running dry because the bike had just began to stutter.

The issue of fuel remaining in the tank is likely to be a weak fuel pump. Mine is for sure not working as it should as Ive had fuel trapped on the right hand side and the bike can stutter at times, though its never failed to deliver when wound open. The tank right hand side traps about 2 gallons of fuel. A venturi pump on the fuel return flow lifts fuel across to the left where the actual fuel pump lives. When the pump is weak the return flow is too low so so your 35 litre tank delivers more like 25 to 27 litres.
