2004 Rockster, can I charge the battery via the bmw 12v socket? Bike is pre canbus isnt it?

It should also say yes WE can not like the overcomplicated shite of the later bikes where the canbus has a little argument with you if try to do things it doesn't like...

As above you certainly can because I have a BMW charger with the plug attached just for the purpose. Never had to use it yet but it's there all the same :)

IIRC that socket is permanently live (ie, it's hard-wired to the battery terminals, well - actually it's hardwired to the starter-motor positive, which is in turn hard-wired to the battery positive, and the negative connection goes through the engine & frame). So - if you've got anything plugged into it that is drawing power, disconnect it when you turn the engine off. ;)

Oh - and hello fellow Rockster rider. (y)

True enough
I use the beak 12v socket to faciltate my GPS power with a DIN plug and always disconnect the lead & plug, when parked overnight in the garage at home or at a hotel
