Can I continue to find some happiness?

Interesting thread. I always where plugs on a ride out, but not when I nip out for a 4 mile trip to pick something up for example. I think it will be plugs all the time from now on.

Tell me more

Needles in various parts of the body, plus ear areas massage, some Chinese 'T' to drink. Also 'ear candling' / 'coning'. Interesting experience. I find it works, other may not.

I wear moulded earplugs with a filter on the bike all the time now.

I know a few who suffer Tinnitus from motorcycling. Years ago I read that riding at 60mph you exceed the Health & Safety noise limit after 15 minutes. Once you get over 100 it's exceeded in a couple of minutes. Worn ear plugs ever since.

I was a scrutineer with BMCRC in the days before racing bikes had silencers. When a form of silencing was introduced we had to measure noise and were given shotgun ear defenders, but before then I would often lose most of my hearing for a couple of hours. One way in those days to tell if a TZ350 Yamaha had its jetting spot on was that the noise wasn't just an angry, very loud crackle, but at one point in the rev range it felt like someone poking your ear drum with a needle.

I thought nothing of it at the time. Roll on decades I had a hearing test at hospital as I noticed a slight loss in one ear (that went thankfully). The Consultant Audiologist asked if I had ever been exposed to very loud noises as although my hearing acuity (ability to hear quiet sounds) was excellent, my ability to hear some frequencies was non existent and was typical of irreversible noise damage. I had been wearing ear plugs for a while by then, but never get on the bike without them.

Ha...ear plugs...that magical "cure all"....!

I would never ride without earplugs, even though the damage has already been done.

For years I rode without them before I knew any better. I now have tinnitus in both ears and loss of the upper noise range also in both ears. I struggle with conversation, watch tv with subtitles and no longer go to gigs. I wear hearing aids in both ears and they help, but don't undo the damage.

Fortunately, my wife is a latecomer to riding (pillion only, her choice) and has worn earplugs from day 1.

ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS!!!

+1 similar degradation here , upsetting ,

I have tried white noise machines. Didn't work for me. Not tried acupuncture yet but ear candles have just been held to be pointless, although one shouldn't discount the value of placebo effects. I could "hear" my tinnitus on a ride yesterday, through earplugs and over engine, exhaust and wind noise. It's with me now as I listen to Led Zeppelin at modest volume.
I have just fitted an MRA vario touring screen. It may reduce wind noise. It will also reduce buffeting for both me and my pillion. I have had one before, on a Varadero and it was brilliantly effective with buffeting.

I know it's too late for some of us but I can't help but think motorcycle manufacturers should be doing more to reduce wind noise on bikes, I'm convinced with their resources, if they took
it seriously, they could make some headway!

cheers

How do find the the Puig screen? I am thinking of fitting one to my GS, do you still look over it or through it? how tall are you?

I'm 5'8.5" and look over the screen on the whole, but there are times when I have to look through it, primarily on steep undulating roads.

A dark screen + dirt when riding into the sun + sun glasses can compromise visibility. I'd buy a clear one if I was buying again.

It's a very quiet and protective screen and good value for money. Cymarc screen braces are essential though to stiffen it at speed.

The ear candles are for a 'crackling' in my right ear, seems to be helping. The acupuncture is also helping with the whistling tinnitus in both ears.
