Can I undo "Save"?

I wrote a letter in Word and instead of using a new sheet I started off with a saved copy of another letter I had just written so that I could use my home address at the top and deleting the remainder. Lazy sod, but it's what I usually do. After finishing writing this new letter I normally save it with a new heading as "Save as" which leaves the original letter saved unchanged.

The fun bit this time was that I saved it simply as "Save" which meant that the original letter has been overwritten and lost.

Can I get it back?

Nope, sorry dude, unfortunately you've lost the original file to be replaced with the most recently saved version.

I think it's lost I am afraid. Why not make your letterhead and then save it as a template? Then in future just start with that template every time.

save copy - shadow copy

Some versions of Vista have shadow copies(business and ultimate) ... locate file in my documents (or wherever it is ) right click on file and choose previous versions .

it's explained here ...excellent tool

I guess Windows 7 will do likewise.

Do a search for *.bak files and see what comes up, you may be lucky.

If you haven't closed what you wrongly saved, try Ctrl+Z until you get back to the version you wanted to keep and then save that with a new name.

vista and win 7 have previous versions if its turned on. If you have it then right click the file and click previous version and select the older copy. XP only has this on a network talking to a 2008 server so if its xp your stuffed.

Have you got a back-up? If you do, then the one you want should be on that surely.

As I use my home laptop for work as well, I bought a large capacity USB stick and have now got into the habit of copying all files from the laptop to the USB every month.

Reset your PC to the day before you wrote the letter and start again.

Don't run your regular backup until you've restored the file that you want from your backup media, remembering to save it under a different name.

To make a template start with a blank document, set everything up as you want your letterhead to look and then when you use "save as" change the file type from the normal (.doc or .docx in microshite office) to the template suffix which I can't remember but ity will appear in the drop down menu below the file name box in the "save as" screen.

.dot files are templates.

Do a search and you'll find where they are saved - not with your usual "My Documents".

Changing a template can get a bit complicated, so use the Help function to talk you through it...
