Allihies again.. but off to Asia soon....
Hi Boys and Girls, as it is not delivered with the mapping cd can you buy it wherever in the world you get the best price. If so this GPS could be a good deal.

Anybody able to answer this please. I would appreciate it...

Yes, you can buy it anywhere but bear in mind the basemap - Atlantic (Europe), Americas or Pacific (Oz).

I've got a US one and the basemap makes for some interesting 'find' results - you can force it to look at City Select rather than the basemap that, for some reason, it defaults to if it's not a local search.

It takes a little bit of getting used to after the simplicity of the V but to be fair I haven't had a chance to exploit it to it's full potential as I'm still waiting for a RAM mount.

I'm also still waiting for my Import Duty, VAT and admin bill from FedEx to find out the final damage, but yes, it works out cheaper to get a US one especially with the weak dollar.

There are advantages to having the correct basemap for the area that you plan to use the GPSR in.

The issue of which GPSR to buy - Americas version at a lower price, but with a North American basemap, or European version at a higher price, but with a European basemap - has become a bit of a political one.

I don't have any opinion on the politics of basemaps, retailing practices, etc., however, you should become as well informed as you can on the basemap issue (the advantages / disadvantages of which basemap to have) before you make your purchase. Then, you can achieve the balance you want between economy and performance.

There have been a few threads in the past few months in which basemaps have been discussed. Here are two of them, for your reading info:

To use a North American 2610 over here...(page 3)

Basemap Theories...

Go through these two, after reading them you should be pretty well informed and able to make the best decision for your needs.

I don't know very much about the 60 series, what the capability of it is, etc. so I can't add much to what Adam has said. I think Adam is the resident SME (subject matter expert) on the Garmin 60.

OK

I have had a look and think that it is a bit clearer now. Adamski can help me out with a report on his 60C imported from the states.

I saw one at 360 dollars but it did not seem to offer european delivery.

I will be living in ireland I hope by the end of the year so I believe from what I read that a GPSV with a european Basemap could be a good bet. But I intend using the thing on boats as well to find dive sites. So maybe the 60C would be a better option.

Get a V, they're a bargain at the moment and they have all the capabilities you need including an anchor alarm function suited to marine applications. You also get City Select maps included whereas you'd have to spend more to get the maps for the 60C.

I still prefer the V to the 60C but as I've said above this is partly down to not having used the 60C enough yet to appreciate it.

The V is my company GPS (one advantage of being self employed) and I bought the 60C as a personal unit to accompany the V, not replace it. This way I can use the CS maps on both and I have the additional memory of the 60C for my European jaunts - 19Mb struggles to cover a large area, especially with v6 of CS.

Any other questions, just ask.
