Can you show minor roads in Mapsource without zooming right in?

I use a lot of B-roads but I find it very hard to plot routes on them in Mapsource. Even with the detail set to the highest level all I seem to get on the map is major roads and black dots all over the place for towns. Its only by zooming right in that i can get it to display minor roads, by which time i am looking at such a small area that I can't work out which route I need to take.

If I try the same thing on Google map I can see most of the route on screen at the same time, minor roads are also visible and its much easier to drag the route to the roads you want. Unfortunately its then a pain in the arse to get that route into the Zumo.

Is there some setting in mapsource that I need to change, or is it just crap?

Mapsource is very far from crap although admittedly it is somewhat quirky.

In the 'View' menu you'll find an item called 'Map Detail' adjusting this should do what you want although it'll still automatically exclude smaller roads until you zoom in closer, just not as much as with a lower detail setting.

There is also a handy drop down menu next to the scale/elevation drop down menu in the toolbar that does the same thing.

You have to zoom in and out to get all the minor roards, right down to donkey tracks.

It's not hard and it's not crap; it's just different.

If you want to route in Google maps, download Tyre to your PC. Then upload your finished Tyre route to your Garmin.

I go out of my way (literally) to only use back roads. I can go 3k miles abroad and use no motorways at all and avoid main roads where possible. It is a bit of a challenge but nice to be out in the sticks with no traffic, cameras, boring roads etc.

I'll probably start an argument but I have a bit of contempt for motorcyclist who only seem to use main roads.

Anyway - to plot a route I have to set to highest detail at 1 mile. That is the only way to see all the little roads. I first prioritise the routing to minor roads, shortest distance, and set up an initial route from A to B. Then with the route highlighted in yellow I go down to 1 mile range and pull the route over to where I want to go. It is painstaking and time consuming but weirdly satisfying.
