Can you tell me some guzzi stuff?

Mikes is not wrong about the costs. Whichever model you start with, (IMHO)the round barrels look so much nicer on a cafe, try to avoid one in top nick as youll just end up replacing much of the decent parts with your own cate parts.
I had the same itch a couple of years ago, It is coming along nicely nearly done.

To put things into perspective,
The current costs to strip,blast clean and rebuild a BMW airhead engine ,gearbox and bevel for a well known south coast custom builder is @£2 to £2.5 depending on spec
The current bike I'm working on will have over£5k spent on it by the time it's finished.:)

I think your south coast builder is taking the piss. It cost me that for a 70bhp morespeed engine with a balanced crank and flywheel and that was all vapour blasted, gas ported and included 38mm dellortos.

Spadas are probably the easiest way to get a round barrel project. I paid £700 for mine last year and another £300 for some spares including a spare engine and cycle parts
 
Here's what I know about Guzzi's.

The valve clearances and spark plugs are a piece of piss to check and replace :D

The 1100 California I've recently recommissioned had a spin on oil filter which lived WITHIN the sump, yup that's right, you have to remove the sump to replace the oil filter. Who the fuck thought that was a good idea???? :loopy

That's not a basic build Rob!!
Add to the fact if it pans out its one a month so trade rates apply.
Once you get into unleaded valve seats etc,etc it starts to mount up so they tend to buy late model low mileage bikes to use for donors as it's cheaper in the long run.
I'm not planning to buy a round barrel model as I'll get lynched at the next do I attend.

Whatever I buy will be a complete rebuild,and will be cheap
Ultimately I want engine,gearbox,drive
Frame and hubs.
Complete bike would be nice but I ain't gonna pay a premium for stuff that's going on on eBay
The rest will be made up along the the way
Does a Cali use the Tonti frame ?
As I'm liking the idea of not sourcing new wheel hubs,
The engine can be tuned as I choose so isn't relevant in the big scheme of things

Check out Swesty's v65TT that's for sale as a project. It could make a really interesting and different middle-weight trail bike.

I decide to build this bike,it has to have resale value.
No one will pay top dollar for anything less than a big block Tonti framed bike.
So, it ,,,,if it gets off the workshop floor will be top spec,hand made.
If I like it I'll keep it,or ,,,,I'll sell it
Either way I don't mind I'll just build something else
I'm looking for advice to buy the right base machine
So the cheapest litre guzzi is a Cali .....?.
Most of it will go in the bin

After 2001 Guzzi went for self adjusting tappets that didn't work too well so it's best to look for bikes upto 2001. The 1100 from 2000/2001 is a gem of an engine and runs open loop fuel injection so no surging or lean running.

Do you know if the Cali 2 early 3 carb model is Tonti framed?
In fairness,none of this will happen till the end of the year,
But I'm looking to source the right doner shed.
I won't be wrecking a perfectly good bike,
I will save something from the scrap heap.:thumb
 
Anything with the Borrani wheels present will fetch good money on eBay.
I bought a little 125 of a chap in Cheshire recently and he had a load of ratty bikes in a barn, one of which was a T3.
 
The Cali's were always tonti frames right through to the last of the 1100 but they did change the rear frame hangers slightly.

You can fit carbs to the fi bikes but you obviously need to change the ignition system as well which isn't going to be cheap - see c5 ignitions

years ago I sold a spada to att. He sold it to one of the guys on this site who was going to turn it into a cafe project. It's for sale for around £1500 I believe. Speak to att I'm sure he'll tell you who has it.

You seem to have moved on from a 'hankering to own' to a full blown commercial rebuild with a profit at the end. However, whilst I'm not keen on seeing another round barrel bike get the hipster treatment, there must be a lot of T3 based unfinished projects out there that can be had pretty cheaply.

If I'd kept every bike I have built over the years I would have a barn full,
I enjoy a project,some cheap some not cheap,
Some you keep a while some you don't.:comfort
