Can you test fuel pump when off bike?

Got the plate off my tank with pump etc attached. Is there any way of testing if the pump is ok when in this state?

I think so mark but I seem to remember (don't take my post as a green light to try it) it'll work off 12 v on the bench but it can ruin it due to the lack of fuel etc.

Yes.
I've done it no problem, just a quick 2-3 second spin.
It worked perfectly until I shot it with a nail gun...
