The centre wire to the plug also supplies distance run data to a Zumo when GPS coverage is lost ie in a tunnel

But a three pin repair plug with cable connections is only just under £7 from Motorworks ref ELA13585.

just my opinion having fitted to 3 bikes using both methods

dont even require to remove any panels, couple of cable ties, sorted

I understand where you're coming from as I did connect direct to the battery on my TL, so I could us Emmy zumo on it, But if there's a socket there to use why not use it.
