Canbus & Tyre Inflator

Just want to check something... I've read that using a compressor to inflate tyres, especially when seating the bead after a puncture repair, can cause the canbus to have a brain fart and shut down the electricals. I think I need a separate power socket wired and fused directly into the battery. Is this correct?

Is this the sort of thing from Nippy Normans what I need? Should I have the engine running when doing this to prevent the tyre compressor draining the battery? Does anybody know of any good cheaper alternatives?

You've read correctly. We bought one of those cheap small compressors from Hellfrauds (I think) and it requires 10A, and I think the CanBus only supplies something like 5A through the accessory socket. The compressor won't even start.

Our solution was to order bits and pieces from Eastern Beaver and build our own system. We've now got a relay, controlled by power from the BMW GPS power socket, leading to a PowerLet socket on the small side panel. The wire is fused too, I think the fuse is at 15A, so there's plenty of power for the compressor.

Yup. Standard power outlet is limited to a few Amps (5 I think).
If you want to run a high power device like a compressor, then you need an extra power outlet straight off the battery (via a fuse, of course).
Also means you can use a bog standard charger via this new socket.

The piccy you show is just the jobby.
Worth paying the extra for good quality components.

Always good practice to run the engine when pulling loads from the battery.
Otherwise it may not start again when you've finished.

Oh, and keep the engine running whilst using heavy draining equipment.

Cheers everyone, I thought as much. Will be using it this week to change over to some TKC80s. Got a good deal on them but don't much fancy paying £50 to have them fitted. I remembered after posting that I saved the waterproof fused power socket off the old bike, which I used to trail up and chuck in the tank bag...

...so I'll use this instead and cable tie it to the frame with one of these thingy bob socket holders from Nippy Normans. Saved myself a tenner and avoided drilling some plastic... Can use this to charge AA batteries and the Iphone while I'm on the move too.

Nippy Normans holder thingy was too small so the socket sits under the seat out the way for now. Changed my tyres over today, popping my tyre change cherry, and used the inflator as suggested with no problems whatsoever... thanks again peeps!
