I've just returned from Cannons in Chelmsford after they did a 6k mile/annual service. Cost was quoted over the phone at '£200 inc', actual cost £316.60. They charged £48+vat to remove/replace the H&B bars and £10+vat for the loan bike, etc.

Following on from other emails, it seems I've been had !

I'm trying to quickly think why they need to remove the H&B bars anyway.

Loads of room to remove the rocker covers without even loosening them.

But that's on a 1200.

Just had 12000 mile service at SPC...
checked with Les (the service manager) whether he would want to take them off for the service (I already knew it could be done without taking them off - thanks to Steptoe's workshop)...
Les confirmed they never needed to come off to do the valve clearances.

This was on an 1150.

They might not need to come off but the do need to be loosened, and that is nearly as much work as removing them.

It might be different on some bikes but not mine, also an 1150

I'm sure Mick_RW will testify this is a change under Les' regime as he certainly did get charged for it.

The general feeling is that dealers 'prefer' to remove them rather than loosen them and work around them and if they do they will certainly pass the charge on to the customer.

I think you are right Andy... I was in SPC booking the service and asked Les the question. He had a look and said it wouldn't be a problem.
I was upfront with him and told him I would take them off if they wanted to charge me as I wasn't keen on paying BWM rates just to take some bars off.
btw.. when I had my 6000 mile service at SPC I was told they would need to take them off... so I took them off myself. This was pre-Les.
As you say... a change with Les being in charge.

Quite right....

Was qouted £36 to remove/replace for a service.

But took them off myself and never bothered fitting them, they hang from the rafters of my garage gathering dust.....and before anybody asks .... not for sale at moment

Once again - i got "carped" at for pointing this out

Here

it feels good to have a second opinion back me up --
