Canon G11

I am planning to buy a new camera and wanted one a bit more capable than a point & shoot but still compact. My b.i.l. is a semi-pro photog. and has a G10 to suplement his DSLR's & he loves it. Has anyone got a G11 & what do you think of it?
I found some good looking deals on ebay but not sure about warranty etc. as they refer to a 'seller' warranty & don't mention a Canon warranty

I had a G5 for many years before jumping to a DSLR, however I always lacked that point and shoot ability so have just last week got myself a G11.

Its a sturdy little camera, not the smallest of compacts but then again you do get virtually full control of the relevant exposure settings should you wish to use them.

In my opinion the G11 offers you that bit more than a point and shoot compact, if you want more control go for the G11 if you just want a point and shoot then look at the lower down spec Powershots that look more like the everyday compact..

Just my tu'puth worth..

Keep on fancying myself a new camera, and thought the Panasonic FZ38 ticked all the boxes. S.i.L has one and thought the G11 was better, horses for courses of course, but the DSLR's all seem too big and bulky. That is, fill too much of a BM 11xx tank bag, on that criteria I guess the G11 is the better bet

Does the FZ38 do filters, I know the G11 can, so you can use a polarizing filter

I have had my G9 over two years, it's good, but I'd prefer the lens of a G11 due to its 28mm wide angle...

Still think in the end the DSLR is better for the instant shutter response but I would be keeping it in my bag more whilst traveling and therefore miss the shot in any case

I really wanted a Ricoh GRD as AFAIT it's the best. A fixed focal length means the lens is as good as it's going to be. Rarely using the zoom on my G9 just further proves that.

G11

I replaced my Canon EOS20D and assorted L-series lenses with a G11, and wouldn't go back. It depends on what you want it for though. The only things I miss about the SLR are the instant shutter response and the 5 fps continuous shooting (however they were only needed a couple of times each year). That said, the image quality from the G11 and its 'compact' size mean I take it everywhere and consequently get some excellent shots which I'd have otherwise missed. I couldn't be arsed to carry the 20D everywhere, so ended up using it less and less.

I bought from Amazon who were cheapest at the time by some margin, but have previously bought from Warehouse Express and can vouch for their great customer service.

I have had a G9 for a while and think its a great camera. I looked at upgrading to a G11 but really couldn't see any benefits in image quality or speed.
For what I need I find the best combination is a pocket sized compact (In my case a Sony HX5) which is the fastest compact I have used and has an outstanding burst function (I think It won the compact awards last year). I then have a DSLR for the more serious stuff.
The Canon G series, although excellent, in my experience, fall between two stools. Not small enough to be truly pocketable and not as versatile as a full SLR.

Expensive but...

A joy to own. Of course, no choice of SLR lenses but the pivoting screen allows you to hold it above your head or put it the floor and still frame nicely for good angles. Unfair to compare it with an SLR, the G11 is far more discreet and can be used with out needing to swing it up to your face and point it at the subject which some people find pretty intrusive especially if they don't like being photographed.

Canon have regrettably lost their way with manuals but there are some excellent handbooks on Amazon. RAW image quality is amazing until a colleague wants a copy for the Website. Video quality is pretty good as is the audio, I rarely take my Handycam these days.

Snap it round to auto and even the other half can knock out a passable smudge. Don't buy a fake "retro" case from China, they are truly shocking in quality and fit. The square canon branded fake pouches are a better bet. The G11 is easy to travel with and slips into your hand luggage without adding much extra bulk or weight. I bought an extra generic battery but haven't had to use it yet.
