My CNv8 update DVD has arrived and the installation went fine. Created some routes for a forthcoming (weather permitting) WW1 battlefield tour and sent them with the required maps and waypoints to the Quest but the GPSR just says "Can't Unlock Maps" with an "OK" selector displayed

What am I doing wrong?

If your unit was registered before 1st Jan 06 then I think you have to pay £48 to get an unlock code. It is only free for products registered after that date.

Otherwise i'm sure a gps guru will be along to help you out.

The Quest was unregistered as of Jan 1st. Have checked my details held by Garmin and my machine is there with the correct s/n and Unit ID shown against the unlock code I was issued. This code is also shown if I re-run the Unlock Wizard - so from the Garmin company point of view everything should be hunky dory

Kritou's problem is different to the ones i experienced in getting v8 Navigator unlocked at it seems his Quest unit will not accept the maps i think.

I was trying to use the original code to unlock the update disc but discovered i had to go to the Garmin website to get a new unlock code generated .Its a shame they didn't put some instructions in with the disc to this effect.

So if its of any use to anyone this is what i did
1 installed setup disc
2 installed v6 city select Mapsource( the one that came with the unit)
3 registered the unit ( it asks you to do this during the setup procedure)
4 installed v8 city navigator ( this is where it asked for the unlock code and i tried the original one and it said they were unlocked )
5 Found that when i opened up Mapsource the maps were still unlocked
6 Went to http://www.garmin.com/
7 Clicked on "SUPPORT" http://www.garmin.com/
8 Clicked on "Mapsource unlock" in the left hand column
9 selected language
10 put in the 7 digit registration code in the "returning customer " box
11 This page told me when the unit was registered and that i was elligible for a free update
12 Clicked on " unlock update disc" and it generated a new code for me
13 Opened up Mapsource on the pc and and clicked on the unlock map details box (bottom right hand of screen)copied and pasted new code
and the fecker worked .

Hope this helps

ps Some pms i have received seem to suggest i am supplying hacked unlock codes this is not the case

Very good. :thumb Almost complete. Add the following points:

2.5 Download the latest version of MapSource from Garmin and install it on your PC.

2.6 Download the latest version of the firmware for the GPS from Garmin and upload it to the GPS.

These two points should be done since the software provided in the box may be 1-2 years old.

Think I've got it sorted ........

The ever helpful Mike down at Garmin in Romsey talked me through my problem and it transpired that:-

After running the upgrade and before transferring maps to the Quest I had initially failed to select the correct Mapsource product from the drop down menu at the top left of the screen. As the maps are decrypted when they are selected into the map pane (and not when they are transferred to or arrive at the Quest) merely changing the product from CSv6/7 to CNv8, as I did, meant an incompatibility between my original, and now unencrypted CSv6/7 maps, and the new "software" with a new unlock code I now wanted to use in the transfer - so the Quest sensed this and threw up it's hands!

The solution was to select v8 from the drop down menu, delete all maps from the map pane on the left of the screen and then use the map tool to reselect the the required maps - at which stage the map files are decrypted and are ready to be transferred to one happy little Quest!

Hope that makes sense

ps. new hiccup - after the upgrade the Quest is no longer interested in locating satellites - even after giving it some nice new amps and showing it where it should be
