Well I've test ridden both now and neither (in the forms I tested them) will fit the bill for serious 25k miles a year motorway and town commuting.
The 1150GS was uncomfortable with the seat in its lowest position because my knees were then too high. I was also unconvinced by the weight and handling. However I did only have an hour on the thing and it was a truely awful day (rain, strong winds etc). The Capo was lovely (really lovely) upto 80mph but then I had serious windblast and the Capo was more affected by crosswinds. Also the Capo has the obvious chain drive/service interval disadvantages which I may have been able to overlook were it not for the other problems. The Capo does have a lovely (really lovely) engine.
On the plus side for the GS I was very impressed by its stability in crosswinds and a footpeg lowering kit and a longer testride may sort my lingering concerns. I'm also going to test an R1150RS although I'm less impressed by its looks. A black GS just looks fantastic. Unfortunately practicality may have to override vanity.
Thanks again for all your comments and help.
