Had 3 days to travel around this last week, so I selected to check out one of the big tourist destinations of Turkey and also one of the World Hertiage Sites.

One planning the trip, one of my neighbours who have ridden with before, asked if he could attend. I was completely cool with this, however worried that he may slow me down as I have a nicely set up GS and he has a little Yam, not the ideal tool for the job, but his attitude is that if he keeps up, fine........only inconvenience for me is the frequent fuel stops. I offer to carry his kit in the GS to make life easy for him.

The bikes:

The destination

We finish work at 2pm and head out, we have 400miles to cover and we plan for this to be before dark......we have 5 to 6 hours. I take the lead with the GPS telling me that we will arrive at 19.30. Sun down is planned for 20.00.... we head into the hills leaving Antalya's heat

Through the mountains in around an hour of pure fun, we drop onto the flat valley floor and start the long road North East...

This goes on for a long time.....only stopping for gas when my partner needs it.

This stop is in the middle of the valley floor, not much around apart from overloaded trucks:eek
363159265_HuZic-M.jpg

and locals coming to fill up their only mode of transport
363159258_F4W8e-M.jpg

We push hard, breaking the speed limit (78kph) frequently! We take 5 hours to reach the destination, it is close to dark and we take a few shots of the welcome, very cosy looking! Houses dug into the mountains.

We find our pre-booked hotel :D

We are soon ready for a night in Goreme the centre of Cappadocia! We meet Fred and Barney (actually Murat and Mehmet:D) at the:
363158635_AGAhe-M.jpg

We see some more houses built into the rocks
363158512_VYSQc-M.jpg

And soon we realise that the "town is one street" and all the tourist are gone for the season.
363158113_fveCb-M.jpg

We find somewhere to relax, things start to slow down....
363158408_yMNga-M.jpg

I will let you imagine the rest........:thumb

Great stuff - thanks for the write up :thumb2

I'm guessing it's quite quiet out of 'season'?

I've got two possible trips on the GS mulling around in my head for next year; one of them is to go to Cappadocia. Ever since I first saw photos of the place as a teenager I've wanted to visit :)

I may well be picking your brains some time soon :beerjug:

Great report, waiting for more if you have any. Elvie and I plan to ride to Turkey next year. Cappadocia is one of the places high on the list, as well as Troy ( Ilium ) and Ephesus! You might be in for a busy time with all these people picking your brains in the new year.

Gypsy/Outtomunch - There is quite an community of expat Bikers building up here. I know of 4 UKGS'ers here so fire away with questions in the Turkey section and we'll do all we can to help!

Commuter - Cappadocia looks good - what did you think of the hotel? Wifey and I are planning to drive down there at the end of Ramazan and are looking at hotels/recommendations...

Day 2 - Tourist for the day

I wake up feeling a little "tired" but cannot get back to sleep due to some funny noises coming from outside (no not that type of noise) I venture outside and find a fleet of Hot Air Ballons.....coming over packed with Tourists!

363157495_fHXjJ-M.jpg

It is only 6am.......sun is coming up.
363157259_GF77V-M.jpg

lots of noise from the constant burning from all the ballons.
363157264_WQkUR-M.jpg

I go for a walk around town....it is deserted.
363157029_VPeHQ-M.jpg

I see that there is an Italian in town.....I do like the new RT.
363157124_4WYRW-M.jpg

I also find a Beetle Van:eek
363157135_9Kzrw-M.jpg

Soon I head back to the only coffee shop open and load up with Nescafe classic, a rude start to the day........ I return to the hotel to find my buddy wandering around mumbling about too much something and breakfast needed:D:D
Soon we are fed, watered and kitted up, ready for the tourist bit. We head to the Church museum which is quite interesting, this has been around since 200AD. Interesting stuff......

364245548_XoKLQ-M.jpg

We have a little problem with the turkish number plate bringing us to a stop on the side of the dual carriageway
364251689_h55G5-M.jpg

I preform surgery
364266953_viLne-M.jpg

We move on. This is where it starts getting a little sticky. I am the navigator
364316298_yPcT8-M.jpg

and I have planned a route back to home. On my newly set up Zumo I see a very nice road shown(remember that bit) on the screen. We pick it and soon start running on it, but within 10ks we have discovered a few problems. It isn't finished! We are now 35k to 40ks off course, but there is a way through I think I can see. Aware that my riding buddy isn't on a GS or anything really designed for off road, we discuss the options. He says "go for it" So I do:D
364307974_ffpnm-M.jpg

We soon are on this type of road

The views are okay
364316686_MygQM-M.jpg

We stop for fuel again:augie
364318993_N4EQD-M.jpg

My riding buddy gets a call that he needs to be back at work in the morning. We are some way from home, but we decided "to go for it"
We push for home which involves a lot of this for around 200miles.

We arrive home at 21.00, happy in the knowledge 1300kms of great roads have been completed in 48 hours. A great few days of riding.

Gypsy/Outtomunch - There is quite an community of expat Bikers building up here. I know of 4 UKGS'ers here so fire away with questions in the Turkey section and we'll do all we can to help!.

Completely agree, now managed to amount around 5000kilometers since being here and have several "routes " from my GPS.

Commuter - Cappadocia looks good - what did you think of the hotel? Wifey and I are planning to drive down there at the end of Ramazan and are looking at hotels/recommendations...

Okay for us, it was "basic" there where family rooms too, don't expect luxuries, most are similar. I will PM you the details.

I saw a very nice place along the way that I will take Wifey to in the future, close to the sites, but with a few comforts. I will dig out the picture and send it to you.

That Italian RT looks like it has been claimed by a German... :augie

Thanks for that Cummuter, enjoy reading about Turkey, its a country we love & have holidayed in many times, stay safe :thumb

Could you enlarge on your GPS and it's mapping? Thanks

Could you enlarge on your GPS and it's mapping? Thanks

I have a Zumo 550 with European base maps, as you may or may not know there is little or no Turkey on it, so through this site (Jezza) put me in contact with a company in Istanbul which will send you a file for around 100 Euros with all the mapping of Turkey.

Clearly this mapping is up to date as the road that we travelled is nearly completed and wasn't there according to the locals 8 months ago.

If you need the details, let me know. NIck

Really enjoyed part 2. If you don't mind will be in touch nearer our departure.

Great stuff:thumb

Went there a few years ago as part of a ME trip. Great place. Fantastic people and scenery.
