a relative of mine may be moving to ireland shortly,if he were to buy a car in the uk for say 10000 sterling.what tax would he have to pay to take it to ireland.also what are the fees for registering it when he takes it over. all info greatfully received. thanks. j

I've brought a few cars and bikes here from the uk.

To register it here he'll need to pay vehicle registration tax (vrt) and he can get a reasonably accurate quote here:
https://www.ros.ie/evrt-enquiry/vrtenquiry.html?execution=e1s1

This can be saucy. After he gets the quote at the vrt centre he can appeal it because of any defects on the car (a scratch etc) and you can regularly get a few bob back.

Tax is on engine size or for diesel cars from 2008 or newer its on co2 emissions. Can be saucy also.

Also if it's 4 years old or older he has to get the equivalent of MOT, called NCT (national car test here). €50 for the test.

Tax, insurance and NCT discs have to be displayed on cars here.

He won't still have a uk address will he? Could save him the hassle for a while.

Ps the Vrt had to be paid and irish plates on 30 days after importing a car and the appointment to get it paid has to be booked within 7 days or importing the car as far as I know

If he has lived in the Uk for the last year or so and has owned the car for 12 months or more he will not have to pat any VRT. Revenue will look for proof of both, insurance and proof of residence. He cannot buy one today and transfer tomorrow.

thanks guys. if ive done my sums correctly its going to cost about 3k in taxes, jeez and i thought we in the uk were heavily taxed. thanks again. j

Correct me if I am wrong but if he owns the vehicle for a period of time in the UK he can bring it in without VRT. I think it is 12 months.

Amazing , just like it says two posts above yours ..................

I do think that after living here for a period of time he will have to pay the vrt, no matter how long he owned it in the uk... My cousin moved here and I remember he was annoyed because he had to pay vrt after a year or so, he lost a nice custom uk reg

Might be better to convert the £10000 to euro, about €12500. A cash buy would get good deal on an Irish registered car without any of the import hassles. Check donedeal.ie some idea of what €125000 would buy.

And of course an Irish buy car will have a kph clock so you don't need to be converting mph to kph in your head as you drive.
