Drip,Drip,Drop,Little April Shower…OH its August.

Having travelled through Austria 3 times ,Julie and I felt it only right and proper to go and spend a few days there. We decided on the Carinthia region partly because it borders on Sloveinja and also my restraining order has ended which means I can continue to follow in the footsteps of that Mester Cooperman. He is faster than me though and covers more ground on his inter continental missile bike. :D
The next deciscion was where to stay, well Gasthof Hochalmspitze after stalking them on here and on Faceache. Met up with John and Ros at the NEC last year and booked in for 7 nights.

Had all the maps out a few times ,fired up Mapsource and Basecamp and plotted routes down and back over winter as you do. Julie told me what she would like to do and see. Then over to me to sort out the day trips. The weather down there has been most excellent all through Spring and early Summer. The week before we are ready to depart Typhoon Billy Whiz stirs up the weather. As we packed Julie says, you don’t need 3 pairs of gloves do you. Lets prepare for the worst says I. Bung an extra set of thermals in too . Over Cagoules too. Julie looks ok in hers but my one tight over bike gear makes me appear to look like an oversized black pudding. We change plans and decide to go down a day early and stay the night near the tunnel. Turned out to be a good decision, shorter riding days in bad weather.

Many Pictures of Julie in the Shower. (Many More to Follow)

We arrive at the tunnel a little early and are bumped onto an earlier train, hardly any vehicles in the lines, we follow them all the way to the front of the train, crossing the wet metal decking at a diagonal had me doing pelvic clenches as like a twat had left me throttle controller on ,a light touch had the bike moving a little too quickly,,, off gas, pushed bike over with me rear end and all was ok.
We emerge from the train into rain and a brisk wind, off we go heads down and do one to our cheap Ibis Budget overnight in Liege. Next door to a nice fish restaurant according to my researching over winter. Bugger Tis closed on a Sunday. So MacDonald’s it is for a fillet o fish.

Up early and on the road by 7.30am for a run down to Munich 426miles of on and off rain so it has improved a bit . At the first petrol stop we check if the gills have started to develop, by the second stop I have webbed fingers. That’s a bonus I think as we may end up swimming there. As we enter Germany it stops raining and we have a almost brisk run to our Hotel Stay2Munich. Shower to warm up and off for dinner.

She looked lovingly into my eyes across the table and says “Oi they are my chips!!!!”

.

Good nights sleep on comfortable beds away by 9am. Only 196miles today but most of it cross country. We start off on A8 but leave a few junctions down , calling for fuel and Austrian Vignette for 10 days. Looking overcast but who cares.

Spoke too soon.

Lets shelter in this long tunnel.

Did I say it rained a little.

Slowly clearing, the smiles back on our faces.

Climbing higher we start to feel the cold , showing 6 degrees. About 2.30pm we need to stop to eat and spot a beacon of light. They usher us in, serving warm ham sandwiches and coffee. We have a second coffee, stopping in there for an hour, warm again for the final push to Gmund and Malta.

Bugger raining again as we follow under the A10.

Down the A99 to Gmund.

Met on arrival at Gasthof Hochalmspitze by John who made us both welcome and we unpacked went over to the bar and swapped the free beer for a pot of tea. Marvellous.

Lovely view from the bedroom window. Time to settle in.

Wednesday 13th August a bus journey and the day in Gmund.

After breakfast discussed with John and Ros, what to do on a rainy day in Malta. Fancied a day off the bike. With our Karnten Cards it cost 1.30 euro each to travel into town and same for return. Nice to be off the bike for a day. We were going to visit the Porsche Museum,Light and sound experience, then castle for lunch. We got sidetracked after visiting Porsche by an art exhibit by a local man
So by the time we arrived at the Light and sound experience, that was highly recommended we couldn’t get on a tour till after our bus back to base.

A few pictures.

Stumbled into some blokes garden,(Fritz Russ Sculture Garden) eye for a pattern and very good welding. Cleaner than mine. His works are commissioned all over the area. Just afew samples

Off for a walk and a lie down after that ! Spot of lunch dear.

All washed down

.

Bus to base , couple of hours loading photos to laptop and reading. Relaxing into the holiday now.

Thursday 14th going to the Pyramidenkogel today. Have written a route to take in some good roads to include the NockalmStrasse.

That’s a slide that is.

More to follow

Sat waiting patiently :beerjug:

( in the dry ) :D

Pyramidenkogel overlooking Worthersee. The view comes and goes as the weather changes. Not for people afraid of heights as you can see through the steps as you walk up or down. On the 10th floor of 12 there is a slide entrance, the entrance fee with the Karnten Card is free. If you want a go down the slide its 4€ . We got two tickets, I gave mine to Julie so she could have 2 goes. The day was so wet on and off that they closed the slide at midday. Well worth the trek though and there is a lift that runs up the middle.

After a spot of lunch we suit up and follow route to the end of the lake,

did I mention the rain.

and then ride up to the Turracherhohe summit,

Julie in the shower again still cheerful.

We drop down to pickup the NockalmStrasse a road I have heard much about but never ridden. Free to ride using the card. Even in the wet it was a top road and one that needs doing again (a plan hatches in my pea sized brain).

Did I mention the rain.

Its clearing as we start to ascend the Nockalmstrasse,

.

Off the pass and join the B99 for a flowing run back to base, being a tad masochistic we decided to head all the way up to the Malta Dam. Another private road covered by the card from the hotel. The weather was wet and changeable still. Another road that must be redone . Add to list.

The road back to base

In time for a hearty tea.

Friday 15th August,

Did I tell you it rained a bit.

Changeable though,so we suit up and set off to do the Villacher Alpenstrasse,Goldeck Panoramastrasse

Villacher Alpenstrasse,

Rocket fuel coffee to keep our spirits up. Here my Dads voice in my head

“we have paid a lot of money to get here lads , I know its raining and cold but we will enjoy ourselves!”

Call at the viewing deck that was packed with a coach party on the way up.
Our view obscured by cloud bugger,

Exit stage right head down ,

Lets move on Julie.

Goldeck Panoramastrasse,

Did I mention the rain,

We get our ham bread and cheese and make up some lunch under the lee of a shed overhang. Whilst enjoying our alfresco lunch we had a visitor. He asked us to move over as the rain was getting to him !

Okidoki we have enjoyed ourselves, so we do one and return to Gasthof Home for tea.

Home made sausages to a local recipe, very meaty. Mmmmmmmm

Tomorrow We is going to Ljubljana a 200 mile round trip. Discussed with John who put in a route on quieter roads. Will take about 3 hours each way.

Saturday 16th August Ljubljana.

A top day with very little rain ,2 quick showers Whooooo Hoooooo on some top roads (Thankyou again John)

Into Slovenija

Ljubljana.

Johns route took us on some grand little roads .:beerjug:

We stopped at the border to shed a layer as it was warming up nicely. Those chance stops where you come across information that moves you. The tunnel under the mountain was made using slave labour from two concentration camps, one at either end of the tunnel. At the border there is a memorial to all those who died and the stones represent the fallen.

A humbling experience.

Onward we enter

Following satnag directions to the centre and I take a bus and taxi gate,:blast saying to Julie over the radio must turn off as soon as, local police motorcyclist follow us down:eek:and we turn off, he is not bovvvvvered . Sure I hear him saying fekkkin tourists on BMWs.:D
We come across a street market reads car boot without cars . Find somewhere to park up and dump our gear into the panniers. Look on the satnav for river and head towards it. We photo streets and prominent features in case we get lost. Not unknown.
The whole place has a lovely feeling .

We have a wander to the market in the old quarter by the river. Taking lots of photos, wandering across all the bridges.

Crash a wedding but the buffet not up to much ,, ha ha:D

I try to ask the dragon about a good place to eat but she can not understand me.:D

We start our “whose busy” at the waterside cafes for finding somewhere for lunch . We settle on one and decide to eat light, long journey home and all that.

Tuna , excellent it was.

Julie wanted some cheese and a salad , most excellent.

Lots of modern art about,

I prefer this Hungarian Beauty,

More of a wander then time to start heading home,

Johns route is mainly small roads,:beerjug:

Back to base for a cold one and some tea.. A long day but a good one.

Sunday 17th August.

A Julie day with a little riding thrown in. Have cobbled a route to go up the A99 to pickup the Nockalmstrasse heading to a floating restraunt for a light lunch then back the other way over the Nockalmstrasse and guess what , YESTERDAY WAS DRY and that is set to continue till after we depart. Top news.

More to follow.

Up the 99 to Nockalmstrasse to Millsattersee return over the Nockalmstrasse.

This photo is going down the 99 back to Gmund ,however dear reader it shows you that now ITS DRY.

Please note the look of Utter Joy on me Fizzog. The Sun has got his hat on hip hip hip hooray!!!

We arrive at Millsattersee just as the lunch crowds have subsided. We order a toasted sandwich and some olives and sit and chill, having to put SUN TAN CREAM on as its very hot in THE SUN.

Back over the Nockalmstrasse 3rd time now and booyak no charge .

We head down the 99 in the sun and ride on up to the Malta Dam in good weather.

OOOOH ERRRR

This last trip up to Malta Dam we videoed as we went two up. May post it once edited.
Tomorrow its going to be

SUNNY.

So we are off up the Grossglockner.

After tea and a

We met a Hungarian called Geza ,on his first bike tour using his phone to navigate to Malta. He too was going to try to find the Grossglockner.

I offered to lead him there and back over a circular route put together the night before taking a backroad shortcut to bypass Spittal. It worked a treat.

Turned out Nice Again

Grossglockner

Monday 18th August

Grossglockner Run

We agree to set off at 9am . We have a brisk run over in good weather. Geza rides well for a new rider. At about 60km we start looking for fuel for his little bike. Plenty to choose from.

We go through the toll which gives a discount with the card from Gasthof,if you take the receipt back to the hotel they will top that up a little more. Well worth it in my opinion. However check with John to make sure you have a good weather window before setting off.
We arrive and take the left fork up to the Franz-Josef-Hohe. Never been up to that bit before. The glacier is stunning and the heat is causing it to create a low lying mist. Very atmospheric. Loads of mountain choughs wheeling around. An eagle of some description is keeping all the Marmots under cover. They whistle to each other oi oi oi bigbird up there keep your heads down them burrows.

Then in complete contrast we drop down and then climb winding our way up to the Edelweissspitze crest. Lovely weather and views.

A little lunch here.

Geza thoroughly enjoying his day.

Interesting bike of the day.

Off back to base.

Back at base we have a quick wash and brush up and down for tea. Two of the Gasthof Hochalmspitze top staff.

Andrew and Julie

Way Home From Austria a little stopover in Speyer

Ok I promise that this is it.

Wednesday 20th August

A Day In Speyer.

Last time we visited Speyer in 2010 it was for an overnight stop. We saw very little of the place and decided to revisit it this year and spend a day there. Julie has a friend she met through the Girl Guides in the 70s called Karin . They have met up only 3 times , so we hatched a plan to meet her there for the day. We stopped at a grand little place the Hotel Am Warturm. On the morning of Karins arrival with the help of the hotel reception staff we visited a florist to purchase some flowers.
Karin arrives in her 70bhp Smart car,

after all the greetings she suggests I sit in her little car, once in - leaving all her baggage on the roadside ,she U turns in busy morning traffic and floors it pinning me to the seat, completely unexpected. So funny at the time, still makes me grin now. I know from this point on we are going to have a good day out. My kinda girl.

We book a taxi and descend on Speyer (Spires) Karin is explaining all our plans, who we are ,where she is from ,to the stoic driver who fanes a merest grunting interest. Dropped in the pedestrian zone in the Town centre we are all impressed. In particular as the day develops Karin is most impressed, having never been there before and she keeps saying , Its only 60Km from home. We have a map from hotel reception and the girl has marked up some eating destinations on the Rhine.
The Weather, Wall to Wall Sunshine.

A few pictures.

May have had a couple of drinks by now.

A novel way of creating more tables.

Town Hall I think.

Thankyou Doorman, “Should I Tip Him Julie” PUNCH…Ow

Light and airy inside,

We then came across this near the crypt, where the cat crept and then crapped.

Do you remember Tales of the Unexpected, well all sorts of images started having seen this.

.

Quick Julie,Karin lets leave.

Leaving through the tradesmans entrance,

We notice 2 things

Lizard door handles.

Romans have been here,

After a regroup and a map read we wander to find the Rhine.

Thirsty Work this exploring business, getting too me know, the beer, such a lightweight.

We do our who is busiest routine and settle on this place at 2pm

We walk back into Speyer and take some last photos by now getting on for 5pm

Julie and Karin by the Museum.

On return to blighty we have a company coming to fit a new roof, tongue in cheek will ask the builder if he can replicate this

Immagine the response , sucks teeth for a long time, mmmmmm that’s going to be expensive ,given you only live in a terraced house Lad.

Anyway, enough nonsense.:D

We had an excellent Day in Speyer, sightseeing and chatting. A top destination we thought.
