Carinthia Austria

Cracking write up and brilliant picture log of the trip.

Did you get any rain? :D

A shame you've had such crap weather to endure. By contrast I've seen about 3 days rain in a month of travelling.

Great pics and always have an interest in the welded art pieces. :thumb2

Felt a bit grim at times, remember the 3 pairs of gloves planning, we also had,extra/spare thermals and over cagoules. Small tub of rennapaur, good equipment extra socks. This meant taking Julie's panniers too, had planned on not doing this if weather was good. Another upside of this all the gifts bought for family had somewhere to live. The rain has two benefits, makes the dry bits more excellent and changeable weather produces some good photo opportunities . Also whilst at Gasthof Hochalmspitze you have access to a drying room. Gear drying overnight without forcing, damaging direct heat. That was a bonus.:thumby:

Cracking video, brings back happy memories from May.
The sharp bend in the tunnel get your attention.

Nice to see the downhill views from the top to the first tunnel - we got to the top in bright sunshine but had to make a rapid descent as a hail/thunder storm arrived as we were about to eat our picnic. I got ahead of it just after the first tunnel so the views were somewhat obscured until then.

Wreck Diver and Wessie. One of the highlights of our trip second time in good weather, late afternoon as most folk were back at their lodgings for beer and tea. Was surprised at how good the footage was on Canon G12:thumby:

nice video.....now imagine that run with 1000 plus german nutters all trying to get to the bottom first....scary!! They assume nothing is coming the other way it seems...

Austrian nutters if you please! Assuming there will be nobody is common practice, not to the same level as the Italians but close. The bike blessing day is always-shall we say-interesting. We have been going since 2008 and amazingly we have never heard of any casualties. With anything up to 1200 bikes all parked on and around the dam it's quite a sight.

For the rest of the season the road is often more like you see in Andrews film. In high season just avoid going up in the late morning. Coach drivers want to get their groups up there for a lunch stop so are on the road in numbers around 11 am.
