Carpe Iter Caretta

Often looked at either these or the Thork racing equivalent.
The advantage Thork seems to have is that it has own navigation and mapping, while this is still just basically an Android phone and you need to choose your own navigation app, but I guess many people are doing that anyway.
I did a big test on navigation apps a couple of years ago, and all of the ones that had any kind of capability for off road or unsurfaced roads- typically needing some kind of track and poi management- were quite complicated. I found Locus maps the best. I haven’t looked at DMD, but I might this year.
On our last trip, which followed the ACT, I did use a rugged Android phone more as a back up to the Garmin but very handy for Google map and such, at least when there was a phone signal

Then plus subscription fees for whatever nav apps you want to use.
The dmd tablet is €700 odd, which includes holder/mount and the dmd navigation software
All up, about the same as a Garmin Montana
Been using DMD2 alongside the replacement (yet again) 710/760i’s.
Been faultless.
Garmin have insisted that we run a fully stock set up as a final test to see if the pin gouging still occurs, etc. they’re certain it’s that causing the multiple shut downs as Ram Dump is showing it to be power triggered apparently.
DMD2 on an Active5 has been absolutely solid.
Online maps and POI search perfect, routing ideal with options, etc.
Berin - you really should try it.
I think that’s where I’ll look next, but no trips planned till next year now.
Does dmd include road maps, CN equivalent? Or do you use MRA or equivalent for road use? I see on the dmd tablet topo maps are included, have you used these?
Does DMD work well complete off line? I’ve found that with some of the apps searching for a destination offline doesn’t work so well.

I've run the DMD T865x for the last 8K and it's been faultless. I've got it paired with a Silverfox C1 so I can pan, zoom and change the map orientation all from my left thumb. I plan my route with MRA then drop them into Google Drive and open them up on the tablet. I had the previous Carpe Iter Tablet with the BMW box thing that let me operate it with wonder wheel and the 4 buttons on the throttle but I couldn't get to grips with it. Find the C1 just easier. The Carpe Iter was more solid and the mount/lock was better but it wasn't as bright or the resolution wasn't as sharp.
I must admit I’m looking at either carpe iter or the Thork racing tablet but I am struggling a bit with the advantage over a rugged phone.
I’ve been using a £200 Blackview or some such, with a Hondo garage wireless charging mount, and it’s been working very well.
I’d appreciate a view from a user on this.
Also, if you are using MRA, why do you put the routes in Google Drive? They should be available directly in MRA - is there a reason you use Google drive?
I prefer the tablets just purely due to the size, it's easier to see everything and useful when I get to the hotel for emails and the like. I use it just like an iPad. I was familiar with MRA before buying the tablets so I find it easy to plot all my routes before I do a tour on. The reason I use Google Drive is because I have folders with all the routes, copies of all our bookings and copies of all our travel docs.
I duplicate on Dropbox too but then download all to the tablet before travel, anything happens to my tablet I can still get all the info in either cloud services. If there is a problem with one of the cloud services I have copies in the other. I'm guessing it's an OCD military thing, I have a back up of a backup for most things. The tablet also has a cheap sim in it so it can be used as a phone.
From experience when something fails everything seems to collapse and its easy to find yourself up the creek without a paddle.
Can you use a 3rd party controller with a Carpe Iter, I never tried when I had one?

While overkill for some, I love a dedicated navigation tablet as all my mapping apps (and music streaming) run completely independently, leaving my phone safe in my pocket with no distractions.
This is more than just a ruggedised generic tablet with some tweaks - it's been designed from the ground up as what for many will be the ultimate navigation device.
I love having a large map in front of me from which I can easily and safely see roads I want to explore (or switch to guided navigation) - it's like having a paper map of the entire world right on my dash.
Designed to work with any bike, it's also going to allow seamless control from the BMW's Wonderwheel.
Testing starts now, so expect a very full and thorough review as soon as I'm happy I've covered everything.

Looks interesting. Though it’s not actually a navigation device till you install a navigation app on it, which is either a benefit or a negative depending on your point of view.
Don’t bother with it.

Our Garmins went back today under an RMA as they’ve continued to play up and they’ve admitted defeat. Offered XT3’s as a straight swap but having used the XT off road the release button on the mount is in exactly the wrong place unless paired with a Touratech locking mount which would mean buying them on top of an InReach device.
They also offered the new H1i as a cost option but it’s fucking tiny.
