Seen this screen for using CarPlay/Android Auto. Phone stays in glovebox/door pocket/WHY and you can use Google Maps/Waze etc. legally.

Anyone tried one?

I may just order one as they are c.£65. (I will report back if I do Richard!)

Looking to use Android Auto in my non-satnav older car - this could be screen mounted in place of current Garmin satnav.

There are units with built-in dash cam - may go that way for an extra £30! (Last of the big spenders)

There are 7" versions which would probably fit into the Givi phone/satnav bag for weatherproofing - all-in CarPlay/Android Auto on a bike for under £100?

Hiya - yes we have one in the van - can’t remember which model and said van is with a pal at present, but it works very well. I’d recommend and you can pick them up from AliExpress for a song.

Thanks to Nin's suggestion, placed my first ever AliExpress order - 7" screen version for £22. Price shown now is higher because it was my first order; they add VAT too.

Whilst you can go wrong, £22 seems reasonable.

Will report back soon - allegedly delivery by 9th January.

One thing I am not very clear on, which maybe someone can help with, please.

Does the touch screen of the cheap device(s) work with an Apple phone? I ask, as some of the blurb might suggest that it only works with an Android phone.

Thanks for any confirmation, one way or another.

Thank you.

Now, we just need to identify the one in your van

I see the weakness in my case …

But I also had a similar unit in my 130i which had Android os, but could mirror apple or android, by cable or blue tooth.

They tend to use Android as it’s open source, unlike apple stuff …

Oh dear. The link to the unit I bought is no longer available!

Well I have had confirmation of shipping, so here's hoping.

Richard - most (all?) the units do both Apple Carplay and Android Auto. Android Auto used to be wired-only but you can get wireless now.

Will it play music/radio through my Bose mini speaker (in my motorhome) ?

The law applies to holding devices that can send/receive data whilst driving. You could just mount your phone on the dash/cockpit/bars.

Snaf, you are correct, but screen is larger, it comes with a mount and I can leave it in place. Plus it’s shiny!

I noticed a 10" version of what you ordered for £36 (incl a separate camera) on that opened online page.
Not a bad price.
I order lots of stuff from Ali Exp but, must admit a third end up in the drawer for use another day.

RP - I was going to get that one, but I think 10" is too large (ooooer) - the smaller version can mount to the right of the speedo, low down, for easier access than reaching across the middle of the car. I have my current Garmin satnav on the right for the same reason.

Unit is clearing UK Customs according the AliExpress, so delivery by 9th January 2024 possible/probable (Younger06 you are a cynic!)

Busy Builder - it has Bluetooth - do you want to stream "phone-this unit-Bose speaker" whilst driving? Not sure if Bluetooth allows that, but might be an interesting project. If streaming when stationary, obviously no need for this unit to be in-between phone-Bose. HTH.

I Have the Alpine ILX-F509 Halo9 9″ Touchscreen Digital Multimedia Receiver in my van. I love it. Expensive, (1500) but I think worth it. All voice controlled.

Just arrived! Ordered just 7 days' ago.

Started to play with it - for £22 absolutely no complaints - shows Android Auto wirelessly, so Google voice command etc. Screen resolution/colour is fine (1024 x 600 in 7" screen)

Just need to learn how to use Android Auto now! Sits neatly to right of steering wheel, usual suction cup mounted on screen, arm is long enough to reach beyond the edge of the dash-top.

I ordered the "reverse camera" option (£1.80!) as I wanted to see if I could use that as a dash cam. The unit's menu has a Dashcam app, so might work out but some wiring required to power camera (designed to be run off reversing light supply).

More later when I sort it all out.

I too ordered one and it also arrived today. I will use it for Apple CarPlay which I have in my work van and really like. Had a little play this evening and quite quickly had my phone, music, texts etc going wirelessly through the car stereo. And I’m left wondering how the F**k can something be researched, manufactured, shipped across the world, with this amount of technical ability for about £20 ?!

We in the West are doomed o_O

I too ordered one and received it today :D . No brainer for the money but I can only get sound out of the tinny rear speaker, how did you get it to work through the cars stereo please??

You can choose a frequency on the car play device on which to transmit on FM, and then tune your car radio to that frequency. on the Home Screen I think.
