Carry on Dakar

Fantastic pictures Tim. When I got back my camera data disc was unreadable so all my photos are lost. :( I wanted to use the ones of you with the monkeys as caption competitions! Luckily Martin got some great ones with his camera and my videos have turned out OK. We managed to get into the bivouac in Quararate and get some great shots of the vehicles being worked on.

Real shame that we had to return so early but Martin had to be back at school and money was running out as well! Had 800 mile ride on last saturday from Madrid to Caen in freezing weather, might need to invest in a heated jacket next time.

Glad to see that Simon got his pannier frame fixed OK. Big thanks to you and Simon for carrying my tyres for those first couple of days. Total trip mileage of 5,000 miles in 11 days riding. Only a GS could manage to be a motorway mile muncher, a fun bike through the mountains and a great off-roader especially two up with loads of luggage.

I met up with Olly on the KTM again when we got the ferry back from Tanger. I think I heard him coming from Rabat.

I would love to see the videos some time?

Cheers

Sid

I think bike deserves a decent service after all that. Opinion on here seems to be CW Motorcycles in Dorchester I think.

Bakerman: yes we went right as well. Our only real problem on M5 was at the start where we couldn't find the right track.

Sid/Custart Tart: video production underway.

Barrie: Head north from El-Kelaá M'Gouna through Touroist, then east to Âit Youl which is partway up the road towards the Gorge of the Dades. April would be a good time before the rose harvest.

Video preview clips

OK, this is 18MB and only a minute long, but it shows offroad riding on a smoother part of the M5 piste. Camera held in left hand whilst riding.

Please right click here and 'save target as' to your machine, then run from there.

Some more pics to fill the gap

If you're in the Erfoud area (north of Merzouga) and need something fixed on your bike, seek out this guy who's known locally as 'Mohammed Ali'. From the main drag in Erfoud, turn west at La Poste (post office) then turn south by the Gendarmerie.

Simon's pannier bracket broke in his spill (first pic in this thread), and although we strapped it to the pillion we were considering parcelling it home. Instead our friend above made up a new bracket from scratch that mimicked the moulded plastic bracket. It took about three hours and cost around £15.

dakb1204.jpg

It had to match the four mounting holes into the rear subframe. It also had to be the right size to allow the plastic case to be clipped on. Wonderful job.

Good place to stop in the Todra Gorge, for breakfast if not overnight. GPS N31 37.297 W5 33.677. I'll add the telephone number when I find it.

Underground irrigation channels from the 17th century bringing water from the distant mountains. The spoil heaps are from the wells sunk directly into the earth, from which the workers dug sideways to connect the channels up.

Simon betrays his Irish 'heritage' with a godammed awful rendition of 'Danny Boy' on the two-string oil-can banjo.

How do you secure two rams to the top of the Land Rover?
Easy, just wrap them in swaddling and tie them down with a cargo net.

Another shot from the Valley of the Roses

We came across this muppet (in the blue turban) with his two sons out of petrol miles from anywhere on M5 piste. We eventually managed to syphon some fuel with the aid of a syringe but I'm not entirely convinced it wasn't a put-up. His two boys (on the extreme right) were freezing so I wrapped them in my jacket and goretex liner.

Not sure where this was. Beautiful anyway.

The video camera is a Sony DCR TRV30E which is a few years old now. The quality of the original footage is superb and I'm currently wrestling with 37 GBytes of digital footage trying to edit it down to an hour's DVD.

One of the many excellent experiences we had on this trip, stopped for one of our frequent tea breaks, Simon gives us a rendition of???? Tim thinks it was Danny Boy I thought it was Irish Eyes are Smiling. Berber Simon UNPLUGED Warning Not pet safe.

I should warn anyone thinking of covering vast inter-continental distances with Steve that he's the founder member and chief invigilator of the 'HardButt 100 Club', an organisation that aims to promote the widespread adoption of breakfast, second breakfast, elevenses, lunch, mid day snack, afternoon tea(s) and other breaks amongst adventure riders.
