Saturday would see a mildly moist ride back to Santander, but boy were we in for a surprise for lunch:

Found this place on the road side:

Which happened to have a small grill:

And then this arrived:

Cheeky fucker! But, yes, the half a stone I put on will be gone in no time, with my regime. :beerjug:

So, in the spirit of sharing one's experiences, here's a list of the hotels we stayed at in Northern Spain, and a good/bad summary:

Hotel Alfonsina, CA-270, Km. 29, 39649 Santibañez de, Cantabria, Spain
Good: Bedrooms with air con & great showers; free private parking; free WiFi & signal strong; friendly staff; excellent breakfast; cracking little bar across the road
Bad: Doesn't offer evening meals - however, they own a restaurant circa 4km away so it's a taxi ride there & back; I should point out that the restaurant is excellent with a delicious menu & superb staff...address of the restaurant is: Las Piscinas, La Pesquera, 39640, Villacarriedo.

Hotel Del Oso, Barrio Areños, 2, 39582 Areños, Cantabria, Spain
Good: Nice bedrooms, delicious food & drink, friendly staff, nice outdoor pool, beautiful location, free parking in front of the hotel
Bad: Showers are average, free WiFi is poor, rooms don't have air con

Hotel Parador de Corias, Monasterio de Corias, s/n, 33816 Corias, Asturias, Spain
Good: Beautiful hotel (a converted monastery), rooms are superb with air con, friendly staff, delicious food & drink, free & private underground parking, free WiFi & signal is strong, there's a little bar near the hotel that sells cheap drink
Bad: Showers are average, centre of town is a taxi ride (5 euros) or a decent walk, swimming pool is a bit small, a charge is levied for steam room & sauna

Hotel Rural La Bolera, Plaza Iglesia, 4, 24139 Robles de Laciana, León, Spain
Good: Bedrooms nice, showers superb, free WiFi & signal strong, friendly staff, delicious evening meal, icy cold beer (served in an iced glass), free parking in front of the hotel
Bad: Breakfast is basic, remote location (but that was ok for us)

Hotel Valdecoro, Calle Roscabado, 5, 39570 Potes, Cantabria, Spain
Good: Good location (10 minute walk into Potes), bedrooms basic but good, great showers, free WiFi & strong signal, free parking, friendly staff
Bad: Breakfast basic, rooms don't have air con

I booked all the hotels via booking.com with the exception of Hotel Del Oso which was booked direct with the hotel.

No doubt Nutty will share his thoughts too :D

Looks like a great trip! Some great photos in that lot.

I haven't stayed in a Parador I didn't like yet and they are great value considering the standard or accommodation and food.

We're just arranging a summer tour next year - three weeks, Paradores all the way, heading down to Southern Spain - but I must do another Picos tour before too long.

I was underwhelmed with the restaurant at the Parador in Fuente De. Food was expensive and pretty average quality. Will try Sos del Rey Católico in September.

We haven't been to Fuente De. We have been to Sos del Rey Catolico, in 2016. We had the local speciality menu which included the best slow roast shoulder of lamb I've ever had.

This was the starter. In the little bowls was "village broth." It tasted like the washing up water after a significantly sized village had finished clearing up after a feast. But the rest of it was delicious.
