I've done a few trails/green lanes on my bike with Tourances on my cast wheels. Can anyone envisage a problem with fitting TKCs to my cast wheels and using them off road a bit this winter?

I have no intention of trying to charge up and down boulder strewn ravines (like the ones I've just done on Enduro Africa! or attempt what Geraint Jones has taken me through on the Yamahe ORE in Wales), just a few muddy trails.

For the use you describe I am sure they will be fine.

I've done the same thing with mine. The first time out I hit a big pothole which has resulted in a small ding in the front rim. I did hit it at a fair speed, so probably my fault for not adjusting my line. It hasn't caused any other problems and could probably be straightened for a lot less than the cost of a spare set of wheels.

Since then I've been out a fair bit and haven't had any other problems - apart from staying upright:aidan

They'll never put up with the punishment..

I really take off my hat to you; I have neither the courage, the strength nor the bank balance to leave the tarmac!

You must let me know when you want to sell your bike!!!

;) having had this very discussion in Supermoto circles a few years ago....
then watching a lad take his cast wheel shod SM round Lydd and clearing the 40 foot table top with no ill effect I reckon for gentle green lane use they'll be fine....
Not sure they'd stand up to repeated impacts the same as spoked wheels but for as you describe...go for it !:thumb

Mine's a minter, you'd be getting a blinding deal:aidan

Seriously though they do drop very well. The crash bars take a lot of the punishment. Apart from that there's a few marks on the rocker covers, hand guards and one mirror. Sort them out and you'd never know it's been on it's side so much. In fact last time out I got a bit carried away. It took over an hour to do less than a mile. Ruts deep enough to ground the cylinders and mud like i've never seen.

Must learn to turn back when it starts getting silly:blast

I think I'll go for it - should I consider any other mods

I rode to Greece through the Balkans on it last year and frankly Albania was pretty much pot-holes and no tarmac all the way (not unlike ChrisKelley's shot of Roimania). My only worry is that having done the BMW experience in South Wales on one of theirs (where I was amazed at what these bikes will go up and down and through) I'm going to venture further then I should. But as you say replacing a cast wheel is loads cheaper than buying a spoked wheel!

Would anyone recommend any other mods or protection. I have lower crash bars. I think I'll get some grippier footrests.

I took my bike down to the Sahara and then over to Mount Ararat in Eastern Turkey earlier this year (14000 miles and all kinds of shite roads). I used the following mods (which all worked really well):

Hepco and Becker engine bars
Fastway footpegs (I highly recommend these)
Jessie alloy plate (sits in place of rear seat)
An alloy plate to sit on the rear rack
Divers bag to sling over the back with 2 x bungees (camping gear, etc).
Touratech bag to go under rear rack (for extra tools and used a mini travel pad lock)
Alloy GPS holder to mount the GPS in the middle of the screen area and within direct view.
Touratech tank bag
Touratech headlight protector
Reno oil cooler grill
Piece of rubber-backed carpet tile cut ot size to keep the crap off the rear shock and battery area - worked a treat, stayed in place nicely and cost nothing.

As you say for the Balkans, many many miles of potholes, gravel, etc and I suffered no dings in the cast rims (and the vario panniers didn't fall off as has been implied could happen on many posts in this forum). But I was careful and didn't get too close to cars lest a big hole appear suddenly.

Cheers, Nordkapper

TKCs on cast wheels

Has anyone else got any pics of a 1200 gs with cast wheels and TKC80's please?:)

I've just had some put on - (I wish I had done it before I had to call on a farmer to get me off a trail in deepest South Leicestershire - I had my 8,000 mile old Tourances on) I'll pop it out of the garage tomorrow and post a shot.

Cast wheels will be fine.

Keep speeds sensible and don't hit any rocks too hard !
