Just been to halfords to get a 1ltr bottle of GP for the 12 and they tell me that they now only stock GPS as GP is no longer produced? Anyone know if this is true and if so recomend what I should top up with between now (4500m on 10\40) and the next 6000m service?

Not sure about Castrol no longer producing it (why not give them a ring?) but Halfords sell a 20/50 intended for use in Classic Cars and I've used this in my GS quite happily.

Have you read this thread (a few rows below yours!) Where can I get 20/50/oil?

Same problem here.Halfords say they are no longer stocking it,because there is no demand for it.Tossers.

I'm looking to see if it's possible to buy it in bulk at the moment, but there's a lot of heel dragging going on.

Just don't waste your time going to Halfords anymore, they're just trying to sell you lots of expensive GPS

own brand 10/40 mineral motorcycle oil, can I just mix?

According to a chap I know from a past life, they're not stopping making it....he pointed out that there are loads of quite obscure products they still make in smaller amounts for all sorts of specialised applications........it's much more likely that Halfords just aren't selling enough to justify having it on the shelves.

they'd always sold out when I went in to get some,so some fecker is buying the stuff.

I sent an e-mail to Halfrauds saying that I'd told all 4700 members of the web site not to bother going to Halfrauds, because they don't stock the oil we all use.

I'll let you know if they reply

As Wapping said to me: "Any oil is better than no oil". I used Halford's own brand 10/40 full mineral oil.

Pidcocks Triumph/Honda dealership... up the hill. sell it. So I guess will most Triumph/Honda dealers. (may be wrong about that)

They only sell it in Litre bottles though... which is a pain.

You can mix mineral with semi-synth.

You can mix mineral with synth.

You can mix semi-synth with synth.

And any combinations of the above.

You can mix 10/40 with 15/40 or 10/30 or 15/20 or near enough any combination you like. I say near enough only becuase, unless you move to the frozen wastes or burning deserts, you are unlikely to find any of the wierder numbers on the shelf of Halfords or your local garage.

For example: If you mixed a say a 50/50 mixture of 10/40 with 15/40 you will end up with 12.5/40. If you mixed a 50/50 mixure of 10/40 with 15/20 you will end up with 12.5/30. All quite acceptable. The numbers simply refer to the oil's viscosity at 'cold' and 'hot' operating temperatures. In other words, at first start (cold) and when the engine has been running normaly (hot).

The Owners Manual shows all the oil / operating temperature ranges.

You don't have to use only Castrol oil, it's only a brand name after all. If you really want Castrol drop them an email, the address is on the bottle or on their website. They will tell you where to get it.

'Any oil is better than no oil' still holds good :D

snip plug for commercial website

As Noria are consultants in the lubrication industry they are hardly an impartial source of information. Their publications are trade directories for their clients.

Sorry for the delay - been away... This is the reply I received from a friend at Castrol when I asked the question...

"The 20W-50 GP product is still available, albeit only in 1 litre and 60 litres (1 litre for top-up, 60 litres for [your favourite bike :D ] dealers). [That High Street store] probably didn’t sell enough of the 20W-50 to justify shelf space.

Any motorcycle shop should be able to purchase the 1 litre packs of GP 20W-50. Even if they don’t stock other Castrol products, there’s a good chance they are dealing with a distributor that can supply."

I hope that puts your mind at rest!

Re. Fanum's reply.

Quote from blurb: Don’t be afraid to bring in an expert, whether it is the lubricant manufacturer, the additive supplier….Unquote.

So, I asked the nice people at Castrol whether it was OK to mix a broad cross-section of 'off-the-shelf' motor oils by:

(a) Manufacturer

(b) Type, mineral, synth and semi-synth

(c) Viscosity numbers (10/40 - 20/50 etc)

The reply, in brief, was: Mix away.

The man at Castrol did say that mixing some of the very exotic numbers (those oils designed to run deep in the Arctic Circle or in Death Valley for weeks and weeks at a time) and / or oils used in some highly specialised machinery may not be too clever. But you ain't going to find those oils on the shelves of Halford's or Greasy Spanners 'R' Us.
