I have been trying all these years to own a bike that is nice and clean to look at, period style, cheapish to run, easy to service, good riding position.
Still not found it, my GS1100 comes close but I want to have a street machine!
Enter the BMW R100RS, with low miles (12000) and I know its sacrilege to even think of using a bike like the RS and make it your own, but needs must
and I cannot be choosy in what I get as the Airhead is becoming even more popular of late and they are getting pricey.
Stored for 20 years tho but the price was OK. See damage to the tank.
In the van it stunk of old fuel so had to bung the hole up.
Back home and a little tinkering found the tank is U/S, took the taps off and this came out
Black rusty petrol. Stained everything it touched, even had to throw the bucket away.
So what else was a waste of effort, ah the filler cap.
Drilled out the badge to get in a self tapper and that snapped, tried another, no good. Eventually the top cam of, followed by the lock and insert.
The screw thread was full of rust, and there's no hope of retreiving that, so another cap is required.
Luckly I won a tank on ebay so that is not an issue.
Removed the seat and freed off the disc so it can be pushed around if needed at this stage. Yes brakes are stuck with the Master Cylinder piston seized.
Good news is that the carbs show very little signs of wear and are in excellent condition, only hope the engine preserved in the same way.
I will have the fairing up for grabs and side panels, seat base is a bit gone but repairable.
Will post more as time goes by.
