I have been trying all these years to own a bike that is nice and clean to look at, period style, cheapish to run, easy to service, good riding position.
Still not found it, my GS1100 comes close but I want to have a street machine!
Enter the BMW R100RS, with low miles (12000) and I know its sacrilege to even think of using a bike like the RS and make it your own, but needs must
and I cannot be choosy in what I get as the Airhead is becoming even more popular of late and they are getting pricey.

Stored for 20 years tho but the price was OK. See damage to the tank.

In the van it stunk of old fuel so had to bung the hole up.
Back home and a little tinkering found the tank is U/S, took the taps off and this came out

Black rusty petrol. Stained everything it touched, even had to throw the bucket away.
So what else was a waste of effort, ah the filler cap.
Drilled out the badge to get in a self tapper and that snapped, tried another, no good. Eventually the top cam of, followed by the lock and insert.
The screw thread was full of rust, and there's no hope of retreiving that, so another cap is required.
Luckly I won a tank on ebay so that is not an issue.
Removed the seat and freed off the disc so it can be pushed around if needed at this stage. Yes brakes are stuck with the Master Cylinder piston seized.
Good news is that the carbs show very little signs of wear and are in excellent condition, only hope the engine preserved in the same way.
I will have the fairing up for grabs and side panels, seat base is a bit gone but repairable.
Will post more as time goes by.

These old Dinosaurs amaze me I bet you put some clean petrol in it and it goes almost instantly. They dont make them like that anymore ,good project. Jellybean I,d personally leave it as a unfecked about with rs with the patina of 30 years but looking forward to see what happens .Awe the best:beerjug:

What do have planned, keep it std you know it makes sense.

Sorry guys, its going to be a Flat tracker style. I know you purest are dead against doing this but there are thousands of RS's about.
It would cost me more to get it back to standard as the paint on the Fairing is good but not perfect and I want a bike that I can use on short hops.
Tried looking for the older naked Airheads but always high mileage.
Hope you wont be affended!

Have fun ,all I know is old airheads can be money pits lol ,every time I think I'm almost done puting mine back together I find another thing that's fecked.

Then if that's the case, the remainder will be worth more:bounce1

Not if someone finds out how ludicrously overpriced they are at the mo... I have an old 100RT that works OK but is scruffy... People will pay as much if not more for these or god help us, an old R65 etc:) than my recently acquired 11GS... As a bike to ride they are chalk and cheese, and as a bike to keep on the road the costs will be that too...

There are a few bikes that have been well "customised" and plenty that haven't... Try to get ideas from the good ones...

I'm all for cutting the buggers up and enjoying them ( then again I have my beedy eye on a healthy mono RS :augie )...to many getting to old to keep restoring back up.......even G/s's sometimes look better modded up !
My RS......

Well said that man!

Don't!....just don't encourage him!!

Those pointless side bars are just about the stupidest thing I've ever seen on a bike. The only possible use for them would be somewhere to dry your socks when you're camping.

True , when I looked at it the "curtain rails" did seem out of place!
