Cat code plug removed

Thanks for the ccp info runs spot on.I ran it for 40/60klm and checkd plugs lovley light brown looks good sofar thanks for tipps sean.

1100GS only

An old thread I know, but I just wondered if there was any update??
Any long term observations?

Reason being, I removed my beige CCP and the bike pulled loads better, with a total absence of surging. It definitely felt like it had more power between 1500 - 3500rpm.
However, I felt as though it wasn't as keen to rev past 4k, and this made the vibrations increase.
I didn't reset the motronic because I didn't know how.
Anyways, I replaced the CCP and haven't ridden it since. I've also fitted an accelerator module to richen the mixture.

I note that in the BBchip instructions, Stage one appears to connect the same as the beige CCP already fitted, but Stage 4 adds a third.
Anyone tried these maps?

Ian

So far as I'm aware no modifications.. ie any that say they improve performance, actually do so on the 1100. If you're having issues... then that will be due to how the bike is set up... trying to fix it by adding stuff just masks the original problem and can perhaps in the long term make matters worse.

From Devon.. I would be VERY tempted to have a ride into London and pay the man (Steptoe) to do his magic.

Wow, what an old thread...

This subject has been covered before but here is a quick recap. On UK 1100's with CO pot the beige CCP is either in place to run as the factory intended with the CO set accurately or out which will immediately richen up the tickover fuelling. This makes the bike smoother at low revs but at the expense of noticably richer mix and possibly "hanging" revs in the 1k to 2 k rev range. Soot will soon increase on the end of you exhaust.

The CCP changes as shown on the BBPower chip (apart from the above two) info are for bikes with Cats and Lambdas. This is more associated with the 1150GS which run with with Motronic 2.4 (as does 1100S) and is covered extensively in "Steptoes Mod" thread.

1st up there are plenty of elements to the standard 1100 set up that make it run at its best such as, valve clearances, Throttle Body (TB) balance, CO pot settings, TPS voltage checks and even cleaning components such as TB's.

There are ways to increase performance with your 1100 but this involves alternative tuning chips with or without a more open intake/exhaust setup amongst other things and usually involves a fair bit of cash:D

There are other "modifications" such as the temps sensor resistors that you mention but whether they do anything for outright performance is very debateable.

Performance chips usually involve mods to the fuel injection duration and ignition advance as FI BMW's are usually set up quite "lean" from the factory as an emissions control.

thanks for that.
I'm aware that a lot 1100GS 'mods' are about seat of the pants dyno, rather than mechanical dyno - for example crisper throttle response, less surging etc.
More speed doesn't interest me, but greater tractability and engine/throttle response does.

Yip, with the 11's they were pretty tight until they had some decent miles on them but most of the mods are there to give it a bit more throttle response and allow it to rev a bit quicker. The leaness is best felt with either on/off/on throttle at anything above approx 70 in top and also the need to change gear more at lower revs. The "elastic" throttle is a fairly common comment.

There is the mod of adding the K12RS (flat 4)/R12GS fuel pressure regulator which is 3.5 bar rather than 3 bar as highlighted by Steptoe way back. This is supposed to give a bit more instant throttle response (have a search). Haven't tried this yet as it's a bit of a pain to get to but certainly not over the top if you are used ot more mechanical work.

I did that mod on my 1100S, along with lazer pipes, Y piece and chip and the Ilmberger carbon intake.
Didn't make enough difference for me to notice tbh....
I reckon fettling is all that's necessary to cure the inherent problems of surging.
i think any twin suffers from low throttle snatchiness to some degree, i'm just looking to minimise it as much as i can.
My biggest regret is that I am unable to do a lot of the stuff myself and get incredibly jealous reading other posts.
I guess the middle of Dartmoor is a good place to ride a GS, but not so good for getting it serviced by a specialist!!

If you work at it and read many of the sensible guides on here you can become your own expert. I've been in Shetland for 6 years and have worked on my own bikes for nearly 10 years. Get a set of balance gauges and a set of feeler gauges, and with a few tools you will be able to do most things.

CO pot setting is only for tickoverish settings on an 11GS after all...

Bit of brains, bit of patience and a bit of knowledge.....
