just a quick question and maybe a stupid one but i see many people seem to be removing there cat's in favor of a y piece, is this a good idea do the 1150's run well or better with this mod?

Cat removed ypiece wth johns chip and original can very good thank you
Run it with just the cat and no silencer at all and just a stubby on the cat.

And there's little more irritating on a long ride than the drone of a GS with Y piece and Remus, CAT and stubby's the way to go ... sounds nice and the bike performs better imo

I'd agree if you take out the inset pipe it is too loud but with the pipe in I find it OK. I have run mine from new (1st March 2003) without a cat and with Remus can. I like the noise! I still have the cat and standard can, both were refitted every year just for the test whilst I lived in Austria. I switched them back straight away every time. It pops and farts sometimes but I like that too, the 1150 is a contraption, it has character. It was this that attracted me to it in the first place. If I could afford a new bike I am sure I would buy one but I doubt I would part with the 1150.

Cat and no can is barely louder than the standard system It is however about 7kgs lighter and as above better luggage capacity. More torque at low revs too!

An 1150 with a cat and a stubby is quieter than a 1200 Hexhead in standard trim, no upsetting the neighbours.

i had a look on utube a chap on there ran his gs in various states cat, no cat , stubby, and standard ETC..... the stubby was a lot quieter than i thought...
Majority of the silencing happens in the cat...dumping the end can and bolting on a stubby is a win win sort of thing

all advise given is much appreciated. apologies for causing offence by making an assumption that replacing a baffled can with an open piece of pipe could in any way be louder, i stand corrected

loads of ideas on here of best way. most will say y piece and original exhaust,but then they will change there minds and say short stubbley is best.
