I have just taken off the cat & the can to fit a y-piece. Unfortunately I can't get the can and the y-piece to come apart. I have undone the nut securing the collar but they won't separate.

Apart from spraying with lots of WD40 (which I've just done) and leaving the lot for 30 minutes, can anyone suggest a fix?

use a bigger hammer:D

But seriously, have you tried heating the joint with a blow lamp?
just keep it moving all around the joint and you shouldn't cause any blueing. It should with the possible addition of a few taps from a soft faced mallet encourage it to come off.

Good luck

Sorted. Like you said, use a big hammer.

They say there are none so pure as the recently converted, but aren't y-pieces brilliant? Why the hell have I ridden round dragging that bloody thing underneath my bike for 2 years? Even with the standard can I notice a massive difference in the bike's performance and sound.

None so blind as those who will not see, haven't we all told you how effective a mod fitting a Y piece is
Well done Mike;)

Heat from a hot air stripper gun and some careful tapping using wood block or rubber mallet should do the trick. Y-pipectomy makes BIG difference... also interesting that some claim the extreme heat dissipated by the CAT onto the gearbox, especially during extended riding in hot climes, nukes the box eventually!?
