Try to run an audio CD and it won't "pick up" - you hear the disk spin up a bit then stop, then try again and again. Similarly when you try burning - the blank CD won't load and Nero won't show the Burn icon.

Is it hardware failure (most likely)? Of course it's 12 months and 2 weeks old.......and bought off eBuy anyway :D

I have an old Compaq E500 - will any similar DVD drive fit (they all claim to be IDE) or do I need a specific one - most eBuy ads seem to indicate specific....

Any comments greatly appreciated

Bump and further info

The drive plays data CDs and DVDs OK, just not audio CDs. Very odd.

Any ideas anyone?

Now I'm really confused

Bump.

I bought a secondhand Sony laptop and THAT does the same - plays DVDs fine but won't spin up a CD.

I'm beginning to think it's a virus!

Any clues, anyone?

Many thanks

Check in 'sounds and audio devices' that your 'puter is showing a soundcard default to play a CD.

Try disconnecting the cd/dvd player in devices and reboot the puter and let it find the player again and re-asociate itself.
