just wanted to check with other 1150 gsers if a little bit of flex / twist on the centre stand when putting onto it, is normal?

mine seems to allow the bike to move a little (twisting) when it is on the stand and wanted to check it wasn't the sign that it's about to fail (i had one snap on an old k100rs which then fell on me :))

on inspection bolts attaching it are tight and no signs of any cracks in it - so i guess it's sound.

anything that can be done to strengthen it / brace it or is it the old "they all do that sir" response?

cheers

Those bolts don't actually secure it positively. They are pivots. As the stand flex's it can also spread at the top on the pivots. Eventually it can fail.

What I did was to first of all get it back in to the right geometry by removing, then applying a lot of heat to the cross bar, twisting it back straight and squeezing the mounting flanges back to the right width. Next I welded on an additional cross brace close to the pivot point. This stops the spread and stiffens it up. Note you can only do it the same way if you have a y-piece in place of the cat. If you have the cat you'll need to be more creative with the shape of the cross brace.
