I put the bike up on the centre stand on Thursday, but thought it looked a bit peculiar, so I took it off again and found one bolt dropped out as it came down, and the other had broken, the "plug" on the othside was only held in by the friction of the grease.

Anyone else had this problem? - have now replaced the broken bolt, and locktighted both in place, but am a bit dissappointed that it seems to be falling apart on me - bike is a R1200GS - 26K miles. I thought it was only Italian machines that did this.

Cheers,
Keith.

Happened to me recently. June 2005 bike with 8,000 miles - the right hand bolt sheared off. Fixed under warranty, no quibble. I wasn't the first on here to experience it...

Cheers, Norm

I also had the RH bolt break on me. Noticed it when putting the bike up on the center stand when stopping to buy fuel. The local BMW dealer had none on hand, but luckily my local hardware store (Ace Hardware, a common franchise in the US) had an exact replacement bolt for a fraction of the cost of the dealer item. I put one in and bought several spares. One of the spares lives in my tool kit now, but I have put at least 10,000 miles on since then without a recurrence.

I think it may have happened when doing some spirited cornering leaning way over two-up with a full load and banging the centerstand on bumps in the road. :nenau

I should have mentioned that the replacements that I bought are slightly longer than the originals. This makes the end of the bolt protrude enough that one could grip it with pliers and unscrew the broken part, should it ever break.

You've forgotten Harleys.

A bolt breaking in a non stressed application like this is inexcusable. Many of the reported 1200GS probs seem to me to be the sort of thing you could reasonably expect and the issue is that they are happening a bit too often compared to Jap bikes. But something as basic as this is unacceptable. Ever. Its just so easy to avoid.

Seems to me that BMW bikes are doing to their quality rep what Mercedes cars have done in recent years.

2004..........

Hi Chaps,
bike is a 2004 model. I was lucky, I did a bit of steel Fabbing / erection work a few years ago, and if I had a couple of odd bolts in my pocket at the end of the day they went straight in a tin when I got back. Had a few in the tin that matched perfectly.

I'd agree about the poor build quality of recent BMWs - I have a R1100Rt winter hack, that has had a new UJ and two bevel box rebuilds in 65k miles. Previous to this I've run Airheads and K series, as well as XJ Yamaha's, GT Kawasaki's and CX Honda's for well over 100 K miles without needing any attention to the rear drive units. I'm so concerned that I've bought a spare bevel box for the 1200GS ready for when this one goes (when, not if!).

It's nice to know I'm not alone with this problem, I guess I'll throw a spare one in the toolkit ready for next time!

Cheers,
Keith.

My right centerstand bolt also failed recently - '05 R12GS, 9600 miles, some 2 up riding.

Why is it always the right bolt? Still waiting for the dealer to get spare parts for replacement of both bolts and both bushings under warranty.

If the bolt protrudes through - it might be an idea to fit a locknut to the end of the thread?

(unless it would be up against an alloy face, of course - I haven't looked)

:nenau Any ideas where I can get a bolt like this?? Apart from the dealer? My bike was knocked over by white van madness while I was at work and when I came to ride home two homeless guys reported the incident in great detail to me. They even managed to pick up the bike and I was well grateful for their attendance. No damage to the bike whatsoever apart from a few scratches to my TT crash bars that I'd fitted only a month previously, phew. Goes to show. Anyway, when I got home I'd noticed the RH centerstand bolt had snapped and the next day I managed to fit a temporary replacement but couldn't find the correct bolt at the hardware store. Any ideas?

Thanks for any hints.

Have you tried STAGONSET? :thumb2

I've used them 4 times and have found them great.
