Centre Stand Pivot Bolt Snapped

Bolt failed on my 05 R1200RT, left side. I never ride the bike off the stand, so it was not caused by that. It is obviously a manufacturing or design defect.
Had it powder coated while it was off and am now struggling to get the big spring back on, hence on here looking for some of that wonderful advice:D

I had no end of trouble doing my springs on my tenere. However, one tip I got was to stretch/bend the spring to open it a little and keep shoving 2p coins into the gap. When I tried this it took a car towbar, my brother pulling it out and me shoving the coins in with 1 hand and holding them in place with the other, and it also helps to use insulation tape to make sure the coins don't drop when you stretch it again to put some more in.

It's not easy, but it helps if you've got a helper.

that sounds like an enormous faff. IME the easiest way to get the stands on bikes on, is to fit the springs (both ends), then the pivot bolts ;)

works on all, all/most bikes i've tried, but no direct experience of the 1200 stand.

That's how I would try first. I'll report back when my stand returns from the enamelers.

Use a normal bolt on one side of the stand fit springs and pull the stand into place to align the other hole if necessary use suitable screwdriver in the hole to lever it into line. Again use another normal bolt on the other side. Now replace the bolts with the proper parts. This worked on my Diversion 900 with a super tough spring, weak strand and stepped bolts (what are they about?) that are bar stewards to get into place. I also used a small podger (mini crowbar) to align the bolt holes.

It does sound like there's a market for a spring stretching tool.

Mine is like a small crowbar with an angle at the pointed and and no split in the blade end. But one of these would do it. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Pro-5pc-M...t=UK_Hand_Tools_Equipment&hash=item3a7e299ac9

If it's any consolation the bolt holding the side stand on my mates Explorer split in 2 and the stand fell off as he was about to place his bike on the side stand:eek:
