Centre stand pivot bolts:

In a little over 12 months use, my 1200 GS has lost or broken 4 centre stand pivot bolts. Has anyone come up with a better way of holding the centre stand on the bike, or have I just been unlucky?

Think I may just have an hour on the lathe later and see if I can come up with a better alternative.

Any advice welcomed.

Are you climbing on the bike and riding off with the cs down?
I'm fairly beefy these days and have not had a cs problem on 5GS's

With the front wheel on the ground turning it causes the bike to twist the cs thus putting pressure on the fixings. Any time I need to straighten the steering while on the cs I push down on the rear of the bike to lift the front clear then turn it. I imagine it`s the twisting movement rather than straight weight on the cs.

lost bolts

G'day Keith just broke my first one....thought it may of happened when i was bush bashing and bottomed out on something.
Now carrying a spare.... curious to know if yours was caused by normal wear and tear or not.
Also check your side stand bolt as mine likes to come loose.

Have to say I've never had a problem and I often turn the bars with the bike on the stand.... 2 years and many puttings off and on the stand

The right hand bolt on mine sheared off after about three months; it was speedily replaced under guarantee and have had no problem since after almost three years; I notice that lubricating them is in the service schedule so I have occasionally given them a little WD 40 spray.

I have to nip up the left hand bolt monthly and the side stand bolt is bent and will not come out, But, it is a bit loose. Gets a bit sticky after rain so a qwik blast of ACF50 and all is well again.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm afraid I never climb on the bike with the stand down and roll off, nor do I turn the bars when on the centre stand very often. I think the problem is that the whole weight of the bike is taken through a couple of flimsy M10 bolts, which eventually either back out (once) or shear off where they are supported inside the "plug" bit.

I haven't tried an alternative yet, but was thinking along the lines of a solid plug (stepped) so that the original plug bit and the support for the stand can be made out of a single piece of steel, (and bore out the stand ends to take a bigger diameter support) then thread the end and have a nut to stop it slipping out.

I'll post what I end up trying and see what you think.

Don't go too mad - something is wrong on your bike, perhaps out of alignment. or some damage to one of the parts; I would suggest a careful examination before you redesign the system!

For anyone interested, I've finally got round to swapping the Pivot bolts over. Attached picture shows the BMW original on the left, plus a first attempt at making a replacement (The ones I used had a longer threaded portion to leave room for full sized nut, plus a short unthreaded section for the stand to sit on.

I believe the reason the BMW version fails, is that the threaded portion of the "plug" bit only supports the bolt for half the width of the plug (the outside half, so the weight of the bike is held on an M10 bolt, hanging out approximately 10 mm from where it is supported. The three failures I have had were all bolts which snapped at the end of the thread.

Only time will tell if my option is any stronger, but the part holding the weight of the bike is now M12, and part of the single metal pivot plug, plus I've made it easier to lube the pivot by grease gun, so I'm hopefull.

Sorry Folks, I hadn't intended to go into production, just to make a couple and see if they resolved the problem for me!

If anyone has a tame engineer, and if it turns out to be a problem others are experiencing then I'm happy to throw dimensions / drawings out for anyone interested.

I wondered how much cross polination there was between this site and MCN's site! I didn't think a group of soft riding, overpaid company directors like you would lower yourselves to their level!!!!!!!
