My dads got an 54 plate 1200 Gs and the centre stand is a wierd looking banana shaped affair that's a bit cumbersome to put up. A 2006 bike has a normal looking centre stand and seems easier to put up.

So is the banana shaped one normal? Did they redesign due to banana one being pants and would a newer stand fit the 54 plate?

Cheers :)

Ps my 1150 GSA is fine! :)

as someone who has no idea what year the bikes referred to are:

Because 54 plate means bugger all to me, I can tell you a little about centrestands.

R1100s & R1150s I could put in the stand without dismounting, & they were so perfectly balanced that one could ride straight off the stand afterwards.
Early R1200s had a new, upgraded centrestand.
This had modified centre of gravity (much further forward) and no rolling action to get the bike onto the stand.
In short, they were much more difficult go get onto the stand, and couldn't easily be ridden off it without 60kg of luggage on board.

Later GS models had a strange looking stand which is much easier to get the bike onto and off.

R1200Rts to this day still have the fucked up stand.

Hope this helps

They did change the centre stand design between the earlier and later models.

For some reason the design change is not reflected properly in the diagrams on the parts fiche as that still shows the banana shaped (older) design even on the later diagrams

The online parts fiche does however show 2 different part numbers for 05-07 (when the factory lowering kit did not exist) and a 3rd non-lowered part number against the 08-09 variant

The original 2004 bikes had the stand pivot point a little too far rearwards - these are identified by the large curved cross piece between the stand legs. I've not tried but by all accounts it can take some effort to get the bike on the stand.
Sometime later the stand arrangement was modified, moving the pivot point forward and changing the stand design - these have a simple straight cross bar between the legs - my '06 bike is this type.
As far as I'm aware the newer stand cannot be fitted to the older bike.
Do a search because there is a technique involving parking with the rear wheel on a raised block of wood to make lifting onto the centre stand easier - no use when you're traveling but can make life easier in the garage/shed/driveway etc.

2005 with the 'banana stand' here, not easy to get on but typical tosser size usually swings it , unless I'm in my slippers - then it hurts my foot.

and no, I don't ride in my slippers, its just if I need to put bike away in the evening!!

Maybe this will help:

Mine is a 2006 Model, which is a bit of a "bitsa", meaning some parts are from the older generation, some from the new. It has the (old) banana centre-stand, but with the (new) modified pivot on the frame, so no problems (at least for me) getting the bike onto the stand.

Thanks that's a useful site - I think I'll get a later one side by side and see where the mounting points differ as I think it's that rather than the shape of the stand :) cheers

Me too

I've got a 2005 with the banana stand and to be honest I don't think I have ever had a bike that is easier to put on the centre stand! slight lift of the subframe while standing on the banana and up she goes simples:D

a bit of 1" timber , roll the front wheel on to it then roll bike back on to centre stand. much easier for a 12 stone weakling like me with little upper body strength.
